Swapped out the front engine mounts today. Used a tree and a tow chain for support to hookup the chain hoist. Pucker factor never hit 5k, but it was a solid 2.5k. blocked the engine off the top of the front axle in case the tree decided to untree.
Some things to note if you ever swap yours...
I've got a guy here in Memphis that does a ton of aluminum fabrication that is going to make some for me. I may get half a dozen made. And I may redesign the top for the ibis base searchlight mount and wiring on several of them.
It just hit me the other day to put the spots there. Mine are LEDs and won't stick out past the box profile. I'm going to fab a roof rack and didn't want them to interfere up top.
Fab shop it is. I had seen people saying they were common before, but if they only sell for $$$$ then I can have one made up. I was hoping they would be cheap like the passenger side.
" (because surplus is always worth the wait and the 100x what a fab shop can make one for)." - I got a good...
Does anyone know where to find the driver's side antenna mount? I have a passenger side and am using these to mount ibis tek steerable search lights, but cannot find the drivers side anywhere. If you have one you would be willing to part with let me know.
You aren't alone. This place is great. Between steel soldiers and the manuals, if you are willing to put in the time you can learn the ins and outs of these trucks in a hurry. I have a list of "thow shall not forget" or "thow shall add to an inspection" from the info here.
I have an a1r too. For added security, you can get a lock that goes over the trailer brake/parking break valves in the cab. I got mine on Amazon. I think it's called a warlock.
Thank you for all of the replies. General, do you know the page of the TM? I can't seem to find it. I was looking at possible using jacks and some cribbing to get everything in position. Thats a big engine crane! If all else fails the part of the world I live in has tons of giant oak...
I've noticed more vibration at idle than normal, and upon further inspection discovered the rubber portion of my engine mounts are cracked ~75% of the way through. Manual says to send it to motorpool at 50%. Has anyone done the change on these before? If so, how difficult? I would be doing...
You are a wealth of good ideas and info. Looking at how you are mounting that in the rear, that is a perfect and robust enough point to mount a swing out spare tire carrier.
Wow. I never thought to google lmtv accidents until now. If there were a series of cheap LTAS cabs to hit the market, I would be in line to get one after looking at these photos. Hopefully my box will provide a fulcrum point to keep the cab from being completely crushed, but this is something...
Wow, I had no idea this would generate this much response. Ronmar, it was nice to meet you at the western round up and thank you for the info here. Part of my consideration is weight. I'm in a 1087, so she is already a big girl empty at 30k pounds. Every pound off the truck is +1 to my...
That is the part in question. The two large extendable eyes and massive assembly that is, of course, huck bolted to the frame. If it can be removed without worry that is great news!
I have seen a bunch of expedition builds that remove this very large and extremely heavy piece of steel from behind the cab, but no relevant information on wether or not it is considered a structural component.
I want to yank mine to extend my box and increase useful load, but have concerns...
Thanks for the reply. I would love to get some in black. Scheelman seats were on the short splurge list for this truck and matching them in black would be great. Do you have any other photos of your setup? It looks awesome and well thought out. I am in full design mode at the moment and am...
