red's M119 camper and other uses

Interesting, wonder why they did that. I'm 5'10" and there is more than enough head room. The drag was substantial, will have to check if maybe the ac was left were it allows air in. The front ac unit is mounted with the intake forward by the looks of it. Just got the wrecker back to the lot...

    "Rescued" M816 Wrecker

Pics from the recovery. Loaded up in St George. Stopped for the night at a hotel since the alternator doesn't seem to be working on the m915a1. Headed out saturday morning and stopped by Beaver, Utah to pick up the 24.5" wheels. Paid $200 for all 11, and I'm not a fan of aluminum wheels...

    "Rescued" M816 Wrecker

After a couple delays drove down to pick up the wrecker today. Slapped the other damaged wheel into place and drove the truck onto lowboy, trailer is just about perfect length. Stopped for the night since it doesn't seem like the m915a2 alternator is charging enough to keep up with the lights...

red's M119 camper and other uses

Thanks, will start working on it soon. It appears pretty solid right now and no funky smells either haha. The front door might get sealed off and a different door added to the passenger side, like the m146's

red's M119 camper and other uses

Will do, hub service and getting the brakes operational again are at the top of the list for it. Interesting to me that it's light enough my 1 ton can pull it (if it could work the air brakes). Also needs new mud flaps. Have a replacement spare tire mount that will be installed. Once that is...

swap the Catperillar D-7155 Overdrive transmission into a M931

Both that engine and transmission were available in civi trucks, gotta be a few of them out there set up that way. They will work together fine. The medium/heavy duty market has things standardized unlike the 1 ton and lighter market where each manufacturer has their own setup (Chevy engine wont...

red's M119 camper and other uses

M119 I picked from auction not too long ago. Don't know if the air brakes or either AC units work yet. Very little rust or other damage, lights work and the tires are in ok condition. Took a few years but finally have my shell for a camper build! Tracked well behind my friends m915a2...

I've encountered a handful that have damaged the bellhousing/adapter that were run without the rear mount. Most on oilfield winch trucks and 1 on a dump truck. Never on a mostly pavement driven truck. There's a reason the rear mount is there and recommended for use with offroad driven trucks.

    "Rescued" M816 Wrecker

Couple updates. Been working on a friends m915a1 and will be using it along with a rented 35 ton lowboy trailer to recover the wrecker next week (pick up the trailer on monday). Trailer has a removable gooseneck so will limp the wrecker onto the trailer under it's own power. Sale is arranged on...

    Cost of Water fording

The hub work is expensive. Shop quoted me $4,000 to service all 6 hubs.

Snapped a Bear Claw on a 5 ton need some direction ...Drivers side 813 A1

The T1138 tcase can be installed into the m809 series trucks (been done by a few here) but his tire size creates a problem. Between the .78 OD from the transmission and .73 OD from the T1138 tcase gives a final OD gear of .57, making 5th gear useless until 65mph. Needs to step down in tire size...

MEP Bi-Fuel (Diesel & Natural Gas) Conversion?

Unless you have an abundance of natural gas for pennies, the conversion wouldn't be worth it in my opinion. The diesel engine allows for a very wide array of fuel sources. Wet stacking problem occurs in engines of all regular fuel types. The issue might be reduced some with using natural gas...

M8xx series vs m9xx series off roading

All m939 are trash and should be sent to scrap metal!! Something like that? hahaha. The differences are minor and even fewer with trucks that are privately owned. Different front body, transmission, tcase, and brakes (but all that can be changed)

    Possible new M51 owner!

One if the companies that makes them, would need a different brake caliper (mechanical) https://www.redbarncustoms.net/rbc-5-ton-rockwell/rbc-5-ton-rockwell-pinion-brakes-1.html Just one would be similar to the stock setup in good working condition, up to 4 can be mounted on the rear axles. For...

Snapped a Bear Claw on a 5 ton need some direction ...Drivers side 813 A1

You have a air switch that is plumed in to disable the front wheel drive correct? (not original as mentioned earlier). If that switch is flipped off then even with the truck's air pressure built up the front wheels should be able to spin forward/reverse with no issue.

M8xx series vs m9xx series off roading

Most of the difference would just come down to preference on transmission, manual in the m809 or auto in the m939. One big trait of that is when going slow up a hill/rock ledge. The gearing in the m809's will let it idle or low rpm up/over the obstacle whereas the auto in the m939 will slip the...

    Possible new M51 owner!

To convert the truck to m939 series airbrakes costs about $1000 in valves, fittings, and air lines. The valves are cheap, it's the hoses and fittings that get ya. Recently went through this on my m816 wrecker. That cost is not including the brake components at each hub. So unless you get a...

    Simp's Cat 7155 Swap into a M923A1

Dunno about fuel hog. Last trip in my m816 staying at 1900rpm went through 17 gallons in 120 miles, just over 7mpg. Considering the wreckers fat ass and the altitude I bet Simp could do better than that when he's running empty.
