4 wheel drive low going forward or reverse which is better for pulling ?

Yes pull forward in low range. Ring and pinion gears are 20 percent weaker on the coast side of the ring gear tooth. The rear axle gear set is usually bigger than the front anyways. That's where the most strain will be pulling forward. Mays well give the work to the strongest parts.

    Another winch mount option

It had to go Chris. I was not driving it. It is to big for the roads up here. I could not even turn around on these skinny roads without driving for miles. Firewood collection will be done in the CUCV with my new M101a2 trailer. I won't mention the two official visits I got checking to see...

    Another winch mount option

Ha ha, Yes Eli. Thank you for taking the torch on my deuce. We still notice the vacant spot. I hope it is everything you had hoped for. And the winch behind the bumper would be great. But is there room for a 12K winch back there? And as long as the controls were reachable in the...

    Another winch mount option

I put a warn 12K winch and mount on a neighbors Dodge today. Before I installed it I parked the winch carrier in front of my CUCV for a look. It fit great. It has enough spread to weld on two square tube sleeves for the shackle mounts with some minor metal work. Then can be tied in to the...

    The mythical CUCV 4L80E swap

Interesting on the heat issue. So do trucks that have 4l80E's from the factory have aux coolers? I suppose I had better get ready to get one since it looks like both you guys are having the same problem. So this is a 4l80E thread. And like me I am sure there are a fair amount of people...

    The mythical CUCV 4L80E swap

Well the 4L80E is already on their work bench. So after a pretty long conversation on it I am going to have to go with that. Gotta have faith sometimes. It will go well. On the .060 gaskets, Quad4x4 a Montana company has them. Honestly everything they have is priced so high it makes a guy...

    The mythical CUCV 4L80E swap

I thought 2K was high also. So before I took it down I called around. Same price at every place. Maybe they know each other... This guy was recommended by someone I bought a jeep from. I spoke with the trans builder several times on the phone asking about a few things before going there. He...

    The mythical CUCV 4L80E swap

Well TCI is out. Thanks for posting on that. Yes Rustystud my 205 is making noise. It was not the 205 my truck came with. The one it came with being a slip yoke got replaced with the fixed yoke syncro unit when the guy welded my TH400 cracked case a couple months ago. He had a HD...

    The mythical CUCV 4L80E swap

I just got off the phone with Kevin at US shift or Baumann Electronic Controls (BEC). I specifically asked about the Tach signal for the Quick 1 controller. He said it was NOT needed for the unit to control the transmission. The Quick 1 controller has been on the market for 6 years now. so...

    The mythical CUCV 4L80E swap

It seems all of the manufactures have had problems. Summit has some reviews on the TCI. Not many to find elsewhere. I learned something today. The US shift unit requires the trans (94 up) to have a black Holley GM #8684216 pressure control solenoid to function properly. Earlier...

    The mythical CUCV 4L80E swap

I will do that. I am still trying to decide. I am updating my above post with more accurate dimensions in case anyone wrote any of it down.

    The mythical CUCV 4L80E swap

What controller are you guys using? I have been on the phone with a couple of them and am still undecided. I have been reading a TON of info on this on the web. Gaaah my head is spinning. I am waiting for the GM oiler plug to show up and the transmission goes to the rebuilder. I have the...

Cracked a TH400 case and support brackets with a NP205

I looked at all those sites. Great stuff and some of it was pretty reasonable. I am going to make the rod and use the rear NP205 round rear cover mount from DIY4x with an extra frame cross member I found in my piles of parts. I may make the crossmember from something smaller but it looks like...

Cracked a TH400 case and support brackets with a NP205

I was just getting ready to make a rod from a piece of 5/8ths. But for 55 bucks that extra support looks fantastic. I just may spring for it. Thanks for posting!

Cracked a TH400 case and support brackets with a NP205

Yes! Good Idea Chris. Here is one with it unbolted off the transfer case. Note the HD in the TH-400 case. Heavy Duty. And one installed correctly but not tight. I saw this and while it probably helps, it causes separate flexing from the engine and trans with engine torque flex. The...

Cracked a TH400 case and support brackets with a NP205

Well I finally found what you guys are mentioning in Bing images. There was a lot of home made stuff like independent mounts made of angle iron and a couple bushings on the frame. But I did finally find two photos of the rod. I would think keeping it attached to the trans or motor would be...

Cracked a TH400 case and support brackets with a NP205

I see others have had this same problem. I did not see my answer though. I had a cracked TH400 case about 6 inches forward of the tail end of the trans case tail end. Mine cracked all the way around and was dumping ATF all over. I run a NP205 transfer case now with a fixed yoke after the weld...

    The mythical CUCV 4L80E swap

I am doing the exact same conversion you are Brazengoat06. I purchased a fully splined output shaft on epay. This shaft has the encoder wheel on it for the speed sensor. I need to measure the engagement needed and trim this shaft back and have it installed when the trans gets rebuilt. Now I...

    Block heater making noise

You could also crawl under and feel the block around the heater. It should be warm after 30 minutes or so. Not very technical but it would be another way to see. I sure have noticed a BIG difference in starting ease here. 8 above and it starts right up after some time heating. Hope yours is...

    The mythical CUCV 4L80E swap

Great write up. I have the trans, I think I found a good builder yesterday from a recommendation. And I hope to start in Feb. The few tools needed to rebuild them yourself are big bucks. It's not worth buying them to sit around afterwards. Or wondering if you did it correctly. I am running...
