FLU419 SEE HMMH HME Owners group

I expect the goal was to trash the prototypes and beef up the production models. GP is a whole other story, much as we like out rigs (warts and all) its all just iron to them.

On a completely different note - I had a chance to talk to a retired factory Unimog mechanic today about a U1300 and it drifted over to SEEs, he worked for freightliner when the first 16 prototypes were shipped over for the army to "evaluate". Apparently the evaluation was to try to destroy them...

If you are new to SEE world (despite having a SEE for two years, I am still new), you will learn that the folks selling NOS surplus equipment on Ebay seem to use a dart board when pricing SEE parts that they bought at auction for 10 cents on a dlollar. I expect there is some source out there...

I haven't done it yet (but probably should), its a standard hydraulic brake system, it just uses compressed air in place a vacuum in the brake booster. I have seen suggestions that a pressure bleeder is the way to go rather than the old fashioned way of someone opening the bleeder screw then...

Nice photos. Did you make an special provisions to keep the excavator mounts from spreading out? I heard comments from people who have removed the excavator that the hydraulics will slowly leak down and the attachments points will end up not lining up with the mounting points. They advocated...

Stuck backhoe bucket pin on SEE

Great job describing the project. Makes me start to think about if I really want to replace my ripper claw bucket with a straight one.

You do realize that an option is to hook up an air line to the air system and chase the air leaks with the engine off? You can buy a air line that connects up to fittings on the air system on either side of the truck. Its set up for inflating tires but could be cut to hook up to standard air...

Importing and titling Unimogs in the US?

Benz World has a permanent sticky on importing a Unimog, the short version is don't do it yourself as its steep learning curve with lots of potential roadblocks and opportunities to have to write more checks. One quick tidbit is you have to pay an import tariff of 25% of the vehicle cost so the...

I don't worry about someone stealing the fuel, up in the woods, it far more likely someone will fill the tank with dirt.

Thanks for the photo of your locking arrangement, I was considering buying a cap just to modify it so it could be locked. I like your setup. FYI for others on this thread, it looks like the cap is equipped with fusible plugs that would melt out and vent the tank if the tank was in a fire...

    Identify this vehicle

The vast majority are gas engines there were a few that got the OM352 diesel. These rigs are built in an amazing number of variations the best thing to do is get the chassis number which I think is stamped in the passenger side frame rail ahead of the front tire. There are individuals and...

Unimog FLU 419 needing a clutch

I haven't done it and don't ever want to do one but I sure would make sure the hydraulic clutch system is up to snuff before thinking about a clutch replacement.

SEE tires - running fronts backwards for road use

I am too cheap to buy tires yet ;) I don't need any additional ground clearance. When I need a tire I will probably stick with the same size and see what is best deal.

SEE tires - running fronts backwards for road use

Not a problem, I am not an offroader. When I am speculating about a SEE I just revert back to what it was designed for which was combat operations support for a ground war against the Soviet Union in the northern forests of Europe. I expect the terrain is similar to NH which is frozen ground...

SEE tires - running fronts backwards for road use

If someone is mostly using a SEE on the road I agree that there are better choices for tires than the Michelins. For off road I think the intent of the Michelins is that they are relatively soft and deformable. In my area when cutting paths I try to cut the trees in the way off close to the...

For surfaces that are exposed for the long term I usually use a product call Boeshield. Its a lube but it also leaves a thin waxy film on the surface that keeps corrosion in check. I haven't used it on a hydraulic cylinder but expect the seals will wipe it right off when its being operated.

That reminds me that Mercedes shipped some mogs with the wrong lighting relays. It one of the service bulletins that I compiled from someone else research that I posted in the miscellaneous technical bulletins forum. The electrical diagnostics section of the manual is pretty good so it shouldn't...

Mine sat out in a stretch of 25 below the first winter. I figure it pretty well killed all the critters. Looking at my wiring its was definitely gnawed.

No air pressure shown, and the big red air pressure warning light is on. Makes sense, since I can clearly hear an air leak on the left side near the tanks If I had to guess, the cross body air line from the back of the air pressure regulator running to the air tanks is rotted out. It has low...
