Did a car show a couple weeks ago:

Deuce shows up around 2:58.
It's a D turbo with a Donaldson truck muffler (in case you're wondering why it's so "quiet").
As you say, that you know how to work on vehicles you should be able to handle the repairs and you probably know enough to inspect it as well. I don't know what tree spades cost including the cost to mount. I don't think the truck will ever be worth more than what you pay for it, but it might...
They take vehicles really seriously in Ohio, or is this common in other states? In Washington, no one looked at my truck. I just bring the paperwork to a desk, pay the money and leave. WA collector plates never expire and never need to be paid for again.
Just because the truck was used in another state doesn't mean it's good to go where you live. You might try to see what it would take to not be classed a military truck, if that's the sticking point. You might also try and familiarize yourself with the rule/law that is the problem. The deuce...
Can you read the numbers on the plate, on the engine? (the plate is on the passenger side of the engine, should be able to see it easily with the hood up)
If you can have a conversation while the engine is running, it's probably a D turbo.
If you want to learn a little bit, read the Wikipedia...
Look up the Alcan 5000 rally, http://www.alcan5000.com/
Registration is a little steep however...$3k.
The deuce might do well in it's class as there won't be that much competition in the Historical class.
This all boils down to how much of a hurry you're in. I've taken my deuce over mountain passes 5 times (paved highway). At one point I had to shift down into 3rd, but I still got where I was going.
Oh, thought you were talking about leaving from Woodinville. Take the ferry to Whittier, and drive north 400 miles.
On the other hand...there are 2 rallies every year that involve the Alcan (winter and summer) time it right and join one :)
I laid one of the old shoes on top of one of the...
Just now came across this thread and being as it's been 2+ years, how do you think the performance of the pre-cleaner has been to the life expectancy of the air filter?
Thought I should provide a counterpoint argument to some of the trepidations brought up in this thread.
I'm not a mechanic. Was never in the military, and never even drove anything bigger than a pick up truck. I'm good at reading things and learning how things work. And I've never been...
The cams swing fine. It looks like if both the holes for the guide pins were just a little deeper that the shoes would fit right. To the eye the shoes look like they're identically the same as the old shoes, but maybe there's a minute difference.
It might be a problem I'll tinker with at a...
Have you ever read the stuff about what AAA covers? They don't cover every vehicle and for the price they charge, I wouldn't expect them too. The average car weighs less than 2 tons and the deuce weighs over 6. I think it's a little unrealistic to expect AAA to tow a semi truck, and the deuce...
Someplace closer than Winlock...
Update: The #2 axle, passenger side was dropping oil, pulled the hub today (Saturday). It appears the shop I took it to, when they decided to pull the hub apart they didn't have the socket to remove the adjusting nuts so they used a chisel and put a divot in...
They can bring you 5 gal of diesel.;-)
I don't rely on AAA, it's just another tool for the tool box. I also carry tools.
Life is short, have fun, worry about the problems when you're dead.
When I was first looking for a deuce I toyed with the idea of getting one transported to me. My research showed that if you had all the time in the world and could afford to move it when it was convenient to a given shipper the price was close to a $1/mile. If you want it now, the price was...
