Brakes are something I don’t experiment with.
Of course it’s his trailer and he can do whatever he wants to rig it.
But if that trailer is ever involved in a fatal crash, regardless of fault, the brakes will be closely examined.
Wrong or modified part means a field day for the attorneys and...
All this trying to get around from paying for the correct shock has been covered and discussed before many times.
The price is the price for the correct shock.
Croft Trailer has the lowest price.
Sure lots of shocks “look” close but there’s only one that’s designed to fit.
The trailer bucking when you apply the brakes means your shock inside the surge assembly is worn out.
Easy to change but the shock isn’t cheap.
The lowest price you will find is at Croft Trailer.

It’s a factory part.

Dexter and Redline should have springs to fit.
Did you already look up the part number in the TM?
That number should cross reference to a new number.
If not, Just carry your good spring down to any decent trailer parts store and match it up.
They can measure the old one and match it to a new...
The redesigned base has the fuel pressure hole removed completely.
There were new filter bases/assembly's on eBay, but haven’t looked in a while.
I installed a new stock assembly about three years ago.
It is the new style without the pressure sensor hole.
Have a second one for a spare...
Watch eBay.
I found a NOS complete set of GM injector lines on eBay just over a year ago.
Very good price.
Haven't used them yet, but at least I have them.
My spare 6.2L Diesel that’s still in the shipping can also has an undamaged set attached.
Aftermarket lines are available.
At least...
Dexter and Redline still offer brand new brake rebuild kits.
It’s a Dexter axle.
No need for a truck brake parts kit since exact replacement kits are available.
Any decent trailer parts store should have the parts.
Standby
I will walk down and check the opening size
Edit;
The opening on my replacement cylinder, with a new hat cap ( 2+ years ago) is 1 5/8”
The hat cap should fit yours just fine.
New Surplus metal bows for the M101A2/3 are still available.
Lighter, stronger and will not warp.
Prices have gone up on them (and everything else), but are worth it in the long run.
Once you get the surge brake system in shape, they work great and last for years without major maintenance.
The hole is to lock out the brakes while backing up a loaded M101A2/3 trailer.
Dexter, also a military supplier, makes a FreeBack brake replacement.
Very easy install.
It allows...
Zed254 is correct.
The surplus hat caps were cheap and plentiful on eBay two plus years ago
I’ve been using them on both my trailers with zero issues.
No moisture, No corrosion and brakes work perfect.
Plus it looks better than a hose hanging down in my opinion.
Welcome to Steel Soldiers.
Trailer base appears to be a M116A3 or A2.
No data plates anywhere?
Manual for the M116A2/3 is in the Technical Manual (TM) section.
Croft Trailer www.crofttrailer.com has the factory parts for the surge brake assembly.
HydroAct is the Manufacturer
