I agree with bighorn and action. Hard starting is almost always due to glow plug issues. And the cold start advance doesn't care what the ambient temperature is. Until the engine reaches operating temp, its "engaged" and the engine will ping-knock. And you indicated the owner said the knock goes...
I would check ALL the glow plugs with a meter. If only 2or3 have failed, your truck won't start or in the very least,be difacult to start. Also,an 8 second cycle time seems short. Cycling too quick will not allow the plugs to warm the chamber for starting.
The fact that it "happened almost over night",leads me to believe it's the fuel shutoff solenoid. I've had a couple of these fail in cucv's I've owned. Easy to change and not that expensive-at least not the 12v. I'm not an electrical guy,and don't recall how to check them,so I don't whant to...
Could be the injection pump. When I got mine,it was extremely slow to pick up rpms/ speed. Even stopped in neutral. Had the injection pump rebuilt, and wow, what a difference! I've had a few cucv's in the past, and none of them ran like this hmmwv does now. I didn't tell the rebuilder to turn the...
Topping off the tank has as much to do with keeping moisture (condensation)out of the entire fuel system as it does tank corrosion. Top off the tank and disconnect the batteries. That's what I do for all my "toys" every winter. Never had a problem.
Start with changing the glow plugs. And DON'T use starting fluid again! Likely 2 or 3 were bad before, but they could start it in warmer weather. Now it's cold. Starting fluid more than likely finished them off.
My hmmwv had the front hub's "over hauled" by the military before being released for sale. During that rebuild, one of the hub vent lines was incorrectly routed so that it touched the axle boot. I didn't catch it during my inspection after purchase, and it eventually rubbed a hole through it and...
I was in a local hardware store. A young man came up to me and asked it that was my hmmwv in the parking lot. He told me he was in the National Gaurd and wondered where I got such a nice one. He said his unit has 7, and none that nice. In fact he claimed only one of the 7 was drivable. The rest...
One thing is certain. No one will ever know why these HMMWV's are being surplused as off road only. Clearly,EPA and safety issues aren't it,or none of former military vehicles would be surplused at all.
the fact remains that the government, through thier delegated agencies/contractor,did in 1999...
Sounds to like some of your glow plugs are bad. I'm not sure you checked them correctly. Although I've not checked Hmmwv glow plugs,I have checked them on cucv's with a test light. Did you unhook the wire to each plug before checking? If you pull them and they are swollen, they are probably...
What Gordon said. Mine wasn't leaking, but the piston had become corroded due to water accumulating in the valley because the drain hole was plugged. But it caused poor performance/ low power. Rebuild cost $ 425. Runs great now.
Yes,check the glow plugs first. Very easy to do. These engines will become almost impossible to start if even 2 are bad.
when replacing, change all- not just the bad ones!
The advice given by papa bear is the best. It doesn't matter what other states do,or even how other parts of your own state view this. It's the local LEO whom will be enforcing, and writing citations. You may find that the local authorities are targeting specific trucks and really don't care...
