The 8.3 6CTA motor in the M939A2 is actually considered the "small" motor. It is just larger (approximately 505CI) than a deuce motor (478CI). The motor in the older M939 series truck was the NHC 250 (855CI).
The switch is not on the dash like on an M35A2 or an M939 series truck. It is a lever on the floor near the shifter. It is the smaller lever under the dash to the right of the others.
I should also say that I saved the pictures as an M920. I am not sure if that is the chassis that was used here, but that is what it said in the listing. I realize there is no pusher axle showing. Perhaps, they modified the truck by removing the pusher axle.
Great responses so far. WRECKERMAN has some great thoughts on the trucks.
Unless you add 1600s, the M818s will be hard pressed to get to 60 mph for extended periods. If you add 1600s, you will lose power (torque). The M916s and M920s are rated at like 58 mph and they will do it. The M915s...
How are you planning to make money? Are you pulling log trailers out of the woods? If so, the M818 or M931/M932 would suffice. Are you hoping to pull log trailers out of the woods and then 100 miles to a logging mill on a highway? Then, the M916/M920 would be a better fit. In the end, it...
BOBBED, I just saw in your signature that you bought a truck from John Winslow. He has a really nice former USN Seabees M925A2 at his place. Fresh CARC paint...winch...rust free...fuel burning heater (probably not a selling point for you in FL). Call him. He told me he was negotiable.
It depends upon the truck. Assuming you are talking about retail from the ebay reference, I'd say that $10-16K should do it. The prices have come down in the last several months. There was a long time where you could not touch a nice M923A2 for less than $20K.
Also, please remember, I (and others) am not telling someone the things that people can and can't do. The rules ARE. I (and others) are just pointing out the rules. If you disagree with the rules, PM the owner of this site to discuss them. They are not my rules. They are the site's rules...
I specifically quoted Richard's "good deeds" quote. That was not done to call him out. It was to respond to something he said. He figured I could take disagreement from him...which I could...and I disagreed with him. I respect Richard. I have personally phoned him to ask for advice and I'd...
I was under the impression that, while Chris is the ultimate authority, the moderators are here to police things. With that said, I also was under the impression that the membership of this site was to help police things ourselves. PM Chris. See what he'd prefer. As I said, I used to get...
joeM62, you raise a great point. There does seem to be some type of double standard. We can't talk about auctions, but GL advertises in the upper lefthand corner. When GL first started advertising, I was one of the people who was not in favor of it. However, after speaking personally with...
The rules say, with regard to upcoming auctions, "no good deeds" are allowed.
• Do NOT post about future or current GL/GSA/eBay (including items for sale in buy-it-now formats)/local/city/state/Federal/estate auctions. You may post about any auction after the auction is closed.
That means...
I have pictures of an AM General wrecker of the M915 vintage. It has a front winch. It was military. I am not sure if it was a prototype, but it came out on GL a while back. I have pictures at work that I can post on Monday (hopefully, I'll remember to do so).
Auction Postings: Please abide by the following rules concerning the posting of auction information in the forums:

You are correct. It is against the rules to post about upcoming auctions. Period. Anyone doubting that should read the rules again and/or contact a moderator. I stopped posting about these things because guys get bent out of shape when you tell them they broke the rules. I am only responding...
