I agree with the opinions above. I, too, have owned both. I like the M275A2 better because it is cool and rare, but the M818 is a better tractor to work. Plus, you could buy two M818s for the price of a nice M275A2! With that said, do as NDT has done and skip both...buy an M915. The M818 is...
Perhaps, a LEO can confirm this as several are on this list, but I think it is illegal to make up a VIN #. I am not commenting on you doing so, but I suggest you delete this thread as I sure would not want to comment about that in a public forum. Proceed as you wish.
Bob, everytime I see your truck, I kick myself for not bidding on it! Glad it went to a good home, though. I just could not pull the trigger since it was so far from me.
I am not sure that the M916 is a rougher ride than the M818. I have had both and I disagree. It is far from riding like a Cadillac, that is for sure. However, I have not noticed that it rode that rough...but I like everything about these trucks. The things that turn some guys off...size...
I have an M917 and an M916 with new motors...they are black...but they are dated in the early 80s. Both motors are definitely "new"...probably can motors in storage. The re-cons were tan.
With regard to the M939A2 series, the earlier motors were black, and the later motors were tan. That is...
Here is some sound advice. Keep watching. Bid early (low dollars), let the trucks go to someone else, and watch the auction results. Then, match that up against your budget and see where you are at. This is the tried and true method that most have us have used.
Why should they go for less than an M105? That is like saying that an M109A3 should go for less than an M35A2 because fewer guys want them. To the guy who wants an ammo trailer, an M105A2 is worthless. Price depends upon condition, how many are available, and how many guys are after...
John, my street address is G'burg, but I actually live outside of Damascus. Stop by anytime to hang out, check out the trucks, or ask questions. Good luck!
In many of the cases, if they keep the stuff long enough (usually three years, from what I have been told), it becomes the property of the agency that acquired it. I once bought an M936A2 from a fire department and received the paperwork from the federal govt that indicated that they no longer...
I hope Richard responds, but I BELIEVE he is referring to the fact that the CAT transmission is a very stout, well-engineered transmission that can take some serious use...BUT...it is a rarity, parts are hard to find, and finding shops to work on them is difficult. How close was I I, Richard...
