The 5 ton sub-forum is seriously lacking in love for the old 809 series. The 900s are getting all the glory.
Seriously though, I run a fix-it thread not just to show others what I'm going, but to help me keep my thoughts and processes straight and to document what I'm doing for my own...
Yeah, you guys are getting/about to get some major snow! Good time for chains.
My parents have a summer home in Maggie Valley (Waynesboro?).
These big wreckers are amazing.
Mkay...definitely 3 sets of unit markings. The final set is:
42 I 2 - 102 (triangle). I'm a Navy guy, so deciphering this is not my forte.
Ok, the 642nd DASB markings are at the bottom, so the truck was there first, around 2000.
The 42 I 2-102 (triangle) is the next layer. 2nd Bn, 102nd...
Ok, I sussed out the most recent markings on top. It looks like the truck finished up at the Regional Training Site - Maintenance (Ordinance Training Battalion), Ft. Dix, New Jersey and it was truck #41. The driver's bumper and rear bumpers indicate NJ 41. That totally jibes with the NJ ARNG...
Since the VIN thread is closed and one didn't get started for 2018, I'll just drop this here. Mods please move if appropriate.
Some of you may have seen the big NJ Army National Guard "You can too!" sign on the back of my truck. The rear bumpers also show NJ-41. Well, the NJ Guard painted over...
Ah, yes I recall that thread. Regardless of why the engines are dying, seeing one taken apart and its constituent pieces was really helpful for me.
I've rebuilt V-8 gasoline engines but this is a whole 'nother level.
Sorry, I just fell out of my chair laughing at the bolded bit. I consider myself lucky to have a wife who not only doesn't mind that I've bought an M813, but is excited to ride in it. I *never* thought I'd hear of a wife with their own deuce. Is it just for fun or are you guys using your trucks...
Manders, I found this video for us "visual learners." It's our engine and the fellow states it's from a 5 ton, but not sure if it's an 809 or 900 series truck.

Welcome to the "Craigslist Generation." I learned this when selling a motorcycle some years ago. People have no respect for property, courtesy or sense anymore.
I respect that as a buyer, you want to ensure that what you're buying operates properly and is in good repair. It used to be that you...
It'll go over it, around it or through it, but not in it.
First thing I did after parking it, was drain the water out of the air tanks and clean the windows and gauges.
I know this thread is old, but I had to comment. What an amazing story. His kids are really going to remember this and the photos will help. We all have fun and interesting stories to tell from our childhood but his kids will have the best ones!
Man, I really struggle with the search feature on this forum. I only just discovered this thread.
Anyway, this is strange reading. My 1971 5 ton has a 17 digit VIN on the data plate on the dash. I have a photo, which I'll post later but the VIN is: 05A84671C12512522. I guess the various...
