The reasoning is pure simple safety and logic.
There really aren't but two choices:
1. Drive (and test) the ground
2. As the human, YOU can be the ground (bad for your health)

Doesn't show you much, but there is a door behind the speed gauge that holds the paper. Square hole to turn the paper and a series of pens for speed and rpm. If somebody has a 915, 916, or a 920 maybe they could snap a picture of it open...

Who says you should READ THE TM's? Like maybe in the -10 where it tells you that the bilge pumps operate only when the engine is running? Was that important?
