    Cranking issue, '86 M1008, previously 12V converted

    You either have a broken bolt or a missing bolt. 2 bolts hold starter to block in addition to the front bracket. It makes no difference if original or aftermarket starter.

    That should work fine. I hook my 12 volt electric over hydraulic pump to the front battery and it gets a lot of use.

    I would check the fusible links connected to the 12 volt diamond on the firewall. I had a similar issue once losing power to the switch and it was one of these fusible links. M1031 was running and died. It fried one of these fusible links.
