What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

Cleaned up the workshop, got the frame back inside. Some rust forming on the epoxy coating... not sure what to do. Was going to paint it next weekend. Think I'll have to sand it down and apply another layer of epoxy primer. Last night I power washed the front axle shell. Got some more grinding...

1986 CUCV M1009 Decade after being wrecked.

Nice work as always Rick. Too bad you're retiring, if you where to ever do an M1008/28 I might've considered buying it from you.

    Lets talk offroad upgrades .....

They didn't come out easy. Try sliding a socket that just fits down the tube.

    Lets talk offroad upgrades .....

I'm replacing pretty much everything except the carrier and pinion bearings, they seem to be fine. I ordered the following from ORD: - 2x D60 Spindle seal & bearing kit - 1x D60 Yoke install kit - 2x D60 inner axle seal - 2x D60 outer axle seal - 2x D60 wheel bearing kit - 2x D60 kingpin...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

I have so many favorited threads and posts from this site (and others too) that it's faster to Google for what I need at that time then to find them in my favorites...

    Lets talk offroad upgrades .....

I've been tearing apart my front axle (Dana 60) and the tubes are full of rust and dirt. It also started to work it's way through the inner axle seals as you can see here: From what I've learned our trucks didn't come with proper outer axle seals. If you're going to be going through water...

    M1009 Rear Axle Yoke

Looks like Rock Auto has USA Standard Gear yokes. I believe those are ok? You could try a company like Offroad Design, but they probably carry expensive upgrade parts instead of OEM replacements.

    Passenger side fuel tank installation

That's what I'm doing, plenty of people have done it, you actually re-use the spare tire carrier bracket. Easiest would be to have a filler in the bed, not sure how you'd plumb and wire it as a 3rd tank though.

    Passenger side fuel tank installation

You might want to have a look at this fuel tank. No more rust. I'm ditching the saddle tank and got the 31 gallon Blazer tank.

    Tranmission to Engine Supports

Some more Googling and more horror stories... I already wanted one, now I want one even more. Might be a hard to get part, but looks easy enough to make one.

    Tranmission to Engine Supports

Only brace I can think of is the one mentioned here. From what I recall they where not installed on CUCVs, but they where on civilian trucks? I don't think it has anything to do with a cracking transmission housing though. What is the condition of your transmission and engine mounts?

GM 8 vs HX35 turbo for boost control

Maybe the following might be on interest to you: https://ptwiringsolutions.com/products/6-dot-5l-turbo-upgrade-kit-hx40ii I've decided to get this one myself for the 6.5 I'm going to put in my M1028. Looks like you can set and forget using the spring. If going with a GM-8 turbo look at Heath's...

    7th Marines M1008

You will definitely want to wait for the 2 part epoxy primer. I had mine coated in it as well, actually going to paint the whole truck with 2 part epoxy primer and paint. It'll be much harder when cured. I'd only use 1 part coating on areas you can easily reach in case you ever need to do a...

    7th Marines M1008

Wow, I like how you took apart the frame. I've thought about going that far before sending it to the painter, but I didn't... Good luck on the project!

Just purchased a 1986 CUCV D30, 6.2L diesel for my son (first car).

That's what I love about these trucks! Pretty sure a lot of us do. No warning lights, errors on the onboard computer and/or limp mode cause some "advanced" electronic failed or got fed wrong readings. About a month ago my Iveco Daily went into limp mode while on the highway and the red engine...

Kinda got carried away..... M1028 rebuild

Just found this last night, thought some of you might like to know. Rock Auto seems to be selling blocks. https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/chevrolet,1998,k1500+pickup,6.5l+v8+diesel+turbocharged,1303625,engine,long+block,5240 Not P400 but 506 and 599 according to the description. The block...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

It set me back 550 euros. Actually, they tried blasted it, failed because of the coating a previous owner put on and had it chemically stripped. Not sure if they had to blast it again after? The primer is two component epoxy.

Engine Mounts - Poly or Rubber?

I think the mounts are similar to that of a 350 block if I remember correctly? I bought the Energy Suspension 31116R mounts. 31106R for the transmission and 34116R for the body. Please note, I did not use them yet, but I came up with these part numbers after intensive research on this forum...

Engine Mounts - Poly or Rubber?

You might want to get these polyurethane radiator bushings as well.
