You don't need to, they are installed so that if the FW hsg is removed, you don't need to dial it in again, but that is a common thing to do anyway, but it is a good idea to install them and peen the holes....think of the Dodge killer dowel.
If you have a pickup, you COULD look into an "S" type shelter. Fits right in the bed of a pick up and you can deck it out how you like.

Don't believe that is a diode, IIRC it is where there is a military waterproof connector in line. A diode is a triangle with a flat line at the tip in line with the electron flow.
Any progress on this? As others have stated, the smoke you have is telling you that the issue is most likely air driven. Blower quill shaft or intake flapper would be my guess.
Have you removed the air filter and had a look see?

They work very well in sand cars. I have seen 3 rotor cars keep the front end up for the complete 1/8 mile. CAn't find videos of cars in the dunes, but here's one of a sand drag event.
