I don't believe that is normal. It gets fairly hot in Maryland in the summer and, even while driving with the A/C on, my engine temperature does not go over 190 degrees or so.
There is definitely a rubber bushing in that spot. It probably eroded, as it did on my 1998 M1078. When I was looking, I could not find the OEM part, so I replaced it with multiple heavy duty large rubber fender washers. The swap seems to have worked out fine as they have been on the truck...
It was GOVLIQUIDATION, but I once won a pristene looking M917. The description said RUNS, but there were no videos showing the truck running. Well, it did run. But, the bolts holding the flex plate were never tightened properly during its overhaul (I assume) as several were missing, some...
The real moral of the story is...auction trucks are a crap shoot. If you can inspect them, and/or you are sure they run well, you'll probably come out OK. But, I've gotten many trucks that needed a lot of work/$$$ to be made right. I've had a few where I was upside down once I was done. But...
It sounds like you have a solid plan for recovery.
I have a question on your tire choice. Why switch to 1400s (aside from road speed)? Most guys are switching FROM 1400s on their trucks, admittedly mostly on M939 series trucks due to the cost and scarcity of fresh 1400s. The stock tires on...
Bring fuel filters. You never know when one may clog and then you are on the side of the road. I'd bring them even if they were just changed. Also, bring a couple of gallons of coolant and a gallon of oil. I'd also suggest adding some Power Service diesel conditioner before you set out. I...
I feel you did well in opting for the title. There are a few states from which they pull their titles. I know they go through Florida as I have gotten Florida titles in the past. I think they go through Arizona, too, but I am not positive as I never got an Arizona title from them. I seem to...
The threads on the fuel filler neck have most likely rusted and the cap won't come off. Use a chain wrench (a strap wrench with a chain instead of a strap) to loosen it. I have an NOS fuel filler neck if you need it, although you really don't need it. You can just install the fuel cap onto...
What about after market oil filters? Don't they make ones that don't allow the oil to drain back? I always kept my trucks stock, but I seem recall reading something in one of the threads about after market (spin on) oil filters. I hope I am not mistaken this for one of the M44 series threads...
WOW! Are you sure that is not for the turbo motor? That was the price of the turbo motor the last I checked about 15-18 months ago. If that is for the NA motor, their prices have gone up substantially (and by that I mean more than doubled). A friend bought a NA 6.5L motor from them toward the...
Eastern Surplus in PA has 6.5 NA (and 6.5 TD) motors for sale. The last I spoke to Bill Peaslee there, I was told they will test run the engine and send you a video of it running. When last I saw, they were asking around $2K for the NA and $4K for the TD...give or take a few $$$.
I have no idea about an answer to your question, so this may or not be helpful. But, I have had an M932 that was a former USAF truck that had a bumper mounted pintle hitch. They reinforced the bumper at the hitch point with additional slabs of 1/4" steel. How well reinforced the mounting...
