HF54 power steering for my M35A2

So now to the box rebuild, since my kit came in. Sure enough, same kit, just different manufacturers. It was good insurance to know I have another on the shelf just in case. The Ross manual I got online (60 pages, PDF) gave a VERY straightforward disassembly and assembly and testing...

HF54 power steering for my M35A2

Day 4-5 So now that the outside of the truck was done, and the completed steering column was waiting there, looking lonely, I decided to install some of the interior components. I installed the upper column I completed the previous day in my kitchen LOL. I also put together all the original...

HF54 power steering for my M35A2

Day 3. Now for some real fun. According to Gerhard's research, who's wisdom and skill I envy, I needed to make my pitman arm 7.5" from sector shaft hole to drag link hole. Mine was 9.5" center to center. So I chopped 2" out of the arm (scary!). I beveled the cuts for a double butt-weld...

HF54 power steering for my M35A2

Day 2 Ok...feeling a little sore, made a power breakfast, and back at it at 8am. I wanted to get the pump and reservoir done today so I could have the hoses made. I didn't realize it but our hydraulic shop in town was going to close for the long 4th of July weekend (Sat-Tues!), so I needed to...

HF54 power steering for my M35A2

Build Day 1 Ok, so onto the reinforcement plate fabrication. So since the HF54 requires some cutting of the frame, and it sits at a 30 degree angle, and obviously bolts on differently than the OE manual steering box, fabricating a strong reinforcement plate is a MUST. I went to the steel...

HF54 power steering for my M35A2

The obvious first task at hand was the tear down of the old system, remove the fender, the wheel, and lights. And buy a case of beer of course...Then remove the stock manual box. It came out easily WITHOUT jacking the engine, however this required separating and draining the halves of the box...

HF54 power steering for my M35A2

So as it turns out, my wife's family in Idaho was planning a get-together around the 4th of July. I politely opted out of that deal...so it was looking like she would be gone for a week. Being we have 4 chickens, 4 dogs, a cat, 2 turtles, a garden, etc. etc. to look after, it was a no brainer...

HF54 power steering for my M35A2

Over the past few years of owning my deuce, power steering was always on the top of my list of things I wanted to upgrade. Finally, after several months of research and looking over the options, I opted to go with the HF54 route pioneered by Gringeltaube. Another member, local to me, Seth-O...

What did you do to your deuce this week?

That happened to mine too. Try taking it off and running over it with the truck a couple times. It got the bend down to a manageable level so that it is still functional. Not pretty but good enough for now. Of course if you're going to get a new one a lot of work to take it off and on twice, but...

Valence, Do you have a wiring diagram on how you ran the manual switch in the cab? Did you use a relay? Thank you. I have a similar setup to this and would like the capability to use them as aux lights as well. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

What did you do to your deuce this week?

Thank you! I'm running 55psi in the rear and no rubbing together at all. About 1 to 1-1/2" of space. Glad I saved your truck from the "knife" LOL. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

What did you do to your deuce this week?

Finished installing the G177's I just got from 98G. In the process of inspecting all the hubs, brakes, and adjusting things while I had it apart, I noticed the front brakes were locked. I thought I smelled brakes the last time I drove it, but I was driving in a lot of stop/go city traffic...

What did you do to your deuce this week?

Honestly the deuce style wheels aren't nearly as bad as some of the other types I've seen. Not saying they are 100% safe but if you know what you are doing with these, keep everything clean, inspect well, and lube everything as you are putting them together, and have experience doing it, take...

What did you do to your deuce this week?

Those are the widowmaker wheels. DOT banned the use of those. If we had a customer come in for work on those not only did we have to refuse to work on them, they had to switch them out if they were using their vehicles for commercial use. If they didn't get new wheels we HAD to report it to DOT...

What did you do to your deuce this week?

I had the super singles on MRAP wheels. I went back down to 1100's. I had 900's prior. The MRAPs felt too bulky for my taste. Here is a picture of the difference in height and widths. I hope these are a happy medium and back to the original look somewhat. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

What did you do to your deuce this week?

The few shops that will still touch them can now "Name" their prices as a result. The tire shop I worked for in the 90's the rate was $50 an hour for split ring, solid rim, aluminum, whatever it was. The job paid peanuts and you were expected to move quick! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

What did you do to your deuce this week?

I'd have that done every weekend if that was the going rate out here. It's $50 a tire to remove and $50 a tire to mount tube-type split ring wheels. So $1000 for the whole truck. Not quite so cheap. Cheaper if you buy their tires. Surplus tires are significantly cheaper than new, or used...
