This is the second deuce I've read about in three days that had a drivetrain failure when pulling something probably heavier than it should. Data plates have capacity limits for a good reason, so take it easy and be safe!
I think next time you pull you should bring a 5-ton instead ;)
I actually like that look and the singled-out 5-tons rock it too on the tandem axles. But it may affect deuce rear wheel bearings but no effect when done with the 5-ton? :unsure:
I had to look one up because I'm not familiar with vintage tractor cabs. The Ford CL-9000 is definitely tall. I read someone referring to it as a "two-story Falcon" :p
That's an awesome truck! It reminds me of the old Ford turbine cabover prototypes with its height. It definitely doesn't look as comfy as the Ford though :p
I learned something when mounting a tire on the rim yesterday. I thought it might be a good idea to use a couple take-off tires to help force the rim up through the new 395 high enough to put the clamp ring on. I laid these two tires on the ground next to each other and flopped my new tire...

I think engine and transmission oil are easy to determine because it's typically spelled out in the lube order. I know my M35A3 takes 15W-40 in both the engine and transmission, so no guessing there.
I forget what GO I'd use, but it would probably be the yellow safe stuff just to be sure...
If you have an original steel tank that's all gunked up and corroded, it might cost less to have it professionally cleaned out and re-coated from the inside than it would to get a NOS tank or a takeout. My dad had that done for fuel tanks for a WW2 jeep, a M37, and a halftrack for probably...
Based on the pictures, I don't think the tires look terrible, at least not as bad as my 27-year-old 14.5R20 XLs! If I were driving local roads with destinations less than an hour away, I'd consider replacing the steers now and do the rest later. But for your type of long trip I'd replace...
Thanks for the context! It seems that the reason that doesn't show up in more internet searches is that MPT describes the tire as a whole and not necessarily the bead specification, this case being a multi-purpose tire.

Just an update since I got some notes about this thread this morning - I did re-use the bead lock insert. Everything went back together with a 395 tire without issue. I took the truck on the road once since and didn't notice any problems related to the warped insert. If anything, it actually...

I was going to do that but I'm beyond that point now, mostly because I don't trust the old 14.5s at all on the road. At least I'll be able to say that I did it!
Maybe I'm getting myself confused with the bead types - NPT I've seen as "non-pneumatic tire", or what Google throws at me the most which is plumbing-related :p I guess it's just MPT or non-MPT? I'm not familiar with different types of tire beads. All I know is that Simp makes changing 5-ton...
I'm on the tandem axle now, and things are moving a lot faster now that I'm using a good blade on my Ryobi Sawzall. To separate the bead from the clamp ring, I've found the flat end of a pick axe to be very useful, more so than the curved end of my big pry bar. I guess it's like a duckbill...
I got a pair of Pro Lift 6-ton jack stands off Amazon for about $45. They can be set to be tall enough to reach and hold the front axle with 395s mounted. The thing that annoyed me about them at first about them is the curved saddle top. I found that they will hold up one side of the front...
So far, all of my leaks have been related to brass fittings either failing or not being tight enough. My o-rings and grommets aren't leaking as installed per the TM :)
