Might also want to check your leaf spring center bolt that holds the pack together, it has a nub on it that sits in the spring plate to locate it on the axle. I just broke the one on my truck this weekend and the steering wheel is all over the place.

When i bought my truck it had the second filter screen over the element, I bought a new wix filter for the truck and there was none on it. However while at work i had to get a filter for a 92 chevy 3500 with a 6.2, bought a new wix and it had the second filter thing in the box with it...dont...
Sounds like your GP resistor may be bad and your getting a 24v to the glow plugs instead of 12v like they should be getting, resulting in premature failure.
