Steel soldier goes to church -- one LMTV's sin & redemption?
If Sunday school discussions stray onto the topic of the affects of an EMP strike (i.e. killing everyone's car), don't offer the solution that everyone should own a military vehicle, if you don't want everyone to laugh, because on...
One of the sources in that study (post #213) cited significant rolling resistance losses due to under inflated tires. Perhaps LMTV/FMTV's 55psi maximum CTIS pressure should be closer to the 95psi maximum tire pressure?
IMHO, before spending $100k, you'd be wise to learn 1st-hand.
So, buy an 3-axle S&S/BAE/Oshkosh FMTV for $10k-$15k; drive it for 4 seasons; then decide.
No gasket, just o-rings (see pix, H2O pump).
Also, after replacing a H2O pump, I concluded the number of alternator & H2O pump bracket bolts to be overkill...suggesting (posted problem) was improper bolts or torque.
Perhaps, an over-adjusted/tightened lash on the steering gear box (top & bottom) is causing it to bind.
Also, the front axle bearings may be loose, and need additional shimming.
Install longer wheel studs and add duals...or flip the wheels...technically, its a simple trigonometric equation, by knowing specified cg mass & location, you can calculate how much to compensate for elevated cg, by widening the wheel stance.
I think that's right..."off-road" limit being defined as the tire/tires on one side (of the axle) off the ground.
FWIW -- The M105 trailer hauls just over 4000lbs of corn (full) at high speed, behind a deuce. But never pull it tongue-light behind a pickup.
Perhaps helpful suggestions -- when towing M1082 trailer w/ 1-ton truck:
To connect to M1082 trailer lights use Hopkins adapter #47405 7-round to 4-flat, but bring magnetic tail lights just-in-case.Zip tie to doors & pin gates to prevent accidental opening/unlatching.
Zip tie magnetic...
my CTIS seal installer from garbage can for no bucks
Kind of flimsy empty...you'll be lucky if one can survives one axle.
But Cost-co has these in 6-packs, so one can per hub will suffice for an FMTV.
