I bought one. Pickup scheduled for next Thursday. It appears to be missing the fuel lines and bowl. Will update with photos after I get it from Southampton. Fingers crossed its a good one!!
Mine puffed black smoke at startup when I first got it, and even did it a little when under load after doing a bunch of maintenance - until I changed the air filter. The unit only had 75 hours, and the filter looked fine. Changed it out on the suggestion of folks on this site, and presto - no...
Not a awaken a mummy of a thread, but some MEP 831's were wired by the military for remote operation. Mine was one of them. The problem is that they have a 9 pin connector that plugs into something unknown to facilitate that, and some of the wiring was rearranged to (I assume) make that...

Hi All,
I’m documenting my experience yesterday with an issue I’ve noticed since i bought my generator.
At loads over 2kw, i would notice a faint grey smoke from the exhaust. It wouldn’t necessarily get more visible as load approached 3kw, but it was there. Also, I’d have random load dumps...
Hi,
The team here eventually helped me figure out the mystery; my MEP-831a had been set up for a military ‘remote start’ of some sort. This configuration is apparently pretty rare, but it changes around some wiring and prevents normal operation. The good news is that it’s pretty simple to change...
Rosh Hoshana. Light day because many are off.
I completed this today. Both wires go to pin 3 on the start switch. That has restored proper function. the wires were secured under that shrink wrapped bulge with a little nut and bolt to the blue wire in the remote start harness.
I additionally...
Not yet - i didn’t have heat shrink ring terminals so i ordered them and then was away until today. Additionally, I’m changing the governor control out to a Kurt K unit, which i just received and am excited about! I’m going to do both things tomorrow; first the wires and test for functions, then...
Just a quick question; how do you arrange check valves in line so that you get a two way flow of air? If they are put in the line in opposite directions, air can't go in either direction. If they are put in the same direction in line, they block in the same direction, no?
Wires
Robson1015, you're a lifesaver! I read through the sticky completely a long time ago, and vaguely remembered that post. That and the 'strange solar charger wiring' posts from others. I just didn't make the mental connection from my issue to yours. LOL.
Now I have to figure out where they...
I have a few of the foremost experts on these generators engaged, thanks guys!
The harness has no markings, but I'll look again. I'm pretty sure it's a military installation. I pressed the seller for more info - He said its an air force unit, 2011 manufacture (which can be seen on the data...
Ah, thanks so much! I’m guessing i should just leave it alone in there and not try to remove it. It seems to have been loomed in by someone who knew what they were doing, so it’s not like a bunch of loose wires flapping.
That leaves me with the curious case of the fault indicators not working...
Hi All,
I've been lurking around this community and finally have purchased my own 2011 MEP 831a! I'm having an issue though that I feel like i've seen others have, but can't seem to find anywhere in the threads. Everything works as it should except the fault test button won't light the lights...
