1009 absolutely HOWLS when it's cold!

Here's my situation... on the first start of the day, or any start after sitting ~4+ hours, my M1009 absolutely HOWLS. I changed the belts and lubricated them with belt conditioner, but it hasn't changed anything. It only makes the noise when the glow plugs engage and the volt meter drops, and then when everything is green and normal, it's quiet again. Do I have an alternator going bad, or is it just so much of a load it causes the belt to slip?

The glow system puts a big load on the electrical system when it cycles. It could be loading your #2 alt. enough to cause the belt to slip. I had a 1009 that would do the same thing. It was always a PITA to keep the belts tight enough to prevent squealing, but not so tight that it wore out the bearings on the alts or water pump. I used the lug wrench to tension the belt while tightening the nuts. There is a hole in the alt. brackets that allows you to do that. Again, make sure they are not too tight. They should have some deflection. Check the manual to see how much.

I don't care much for belt dressing. I tried it with my CUCV too in the early days. It's like belt-meth. Once you give them a taste of it, they won't work again without it. :p The belts will glaze up pretty quick once they start to slip. Look at the friction surfaces and if they are all shiny, then the belt is probably toast. Make sure you buy a good quality of belt too. I found that you get what you pay for when it comes to belts.

I always wondered why in the heck GM didn't design the alt's to use double drive belts, both for redundancy and drive power.

could be a bad alternator... the bearings going?? You can change out the bearings for about 5 bucks each.
Where do you get them and any specific part number? Do they have to be pressed in and out?

no the front is held in with a plate and the rear you can tap out with a hammer.. its too ez. If you take the bearings out they can match them up. (there only like 3 sizes in GM alt bearings in the 70's - late 80's

Can't believe 8 year old belts of any brand were still in service...I'd say that's pretty good regardless of brand!
They might have been older . I bought the truck 4 years ago and it was parked 4 years before it went to auction.

I scored because the Texas parks Service got it from down the street at Fort Sam and never cold get it running so they parked it from day one.

After the auction ended I showed up with a new Glow plug relay and 2 hot batterys and drove it home.
The woman that showed me the truck before the auction ended and handed me the keys after I won was in total shock when I fired it up and drove off in it.

Still runs great.
