1009 Blue and Black smoke?

My cucv puts out blue smoke on straight diesel and black smoke on a 75/25 diesel/wmo mix. It also idles a little rough when cold on both fuels, almost like a miss. Any ideas? The smoke seems a bit excessive, and it did not use to do it as bad. I am wondering about my injectors?

Maybe. Typically blue smoke is indicative of oil getting into the fuel, usually because of bad piston rings, bores or both. Black smoke is usually indicative of unburnt fuel in the exhaust I.E. too rich. In this case, my guess is the engine can't quite burn some of the stuff you're throwing in there (most likely the WMO) I'd also check to make sure your air filter's clean.

The air filter is new, I even tried taking the foam prefilter off to give it more air. The blue smoke does for the most part quit as soon as the engine warms up. It never puts out black smoke , unless there is wmo in the mix.

Mine does the same thing-a bit of smoke when it's cold, on fast idle and getting warmed up. The black smoke is probably from the WMO in the mix. The only thing I can think of to help you with this is turning down the fuel a bit (probably 1/8 turn, 1/4 at the most) or adding a turbo (in which case, you'll have to turn the fuel up) The reason they added a turbo to the old multifuel deuces was to clean up the notoriously black smoke. You ever seen the exhaust smoke off a non-turbo deuce?

Compare that to this A little bit of smoke, but not as much and he was doing a sled pull which usually means there should be a LOT.

I have a turbo and non turbo and there is a lot of difference in the smoke and power. If smoke meant power the non turbo would be a speed demon. LOL

But, but, but, the exhaust from my Cummins is bigger than a mushroom cloud! So I must have like, 23 gajillion horsepower! Right?

I just drove it to work, and topped the tank off with diesel, to dilute my existing WMO mix down to less than 10%. I have a little blue smoke under hard throttle, do these things always smoke a little, or is mine just screwed up?

I have no smoke while driving.

I use clean diesel only.

A CUCV is NOT a multifuel! It is designed to burn diesel and diesel only. You are answering your own questions here. the less oil the less smoke, that should be telling you something.

After 3 or more full tanks of pure Diesel the WMO should be purged from the system. Try to run the tank almost dry before refill. I would not be concerned with smoke until all the WMO is gone.

From my experiance prolonged excessive WMO% can decrease performance and make starting more difficult. All of these symptoms will increase in the Winter as the temperature drops.

running on wmo

I have a question for doghead, How can wmo be filtered enough to run through a non multi fuel engine without any problems? I also run good quality diesel in my truck and would never consider running contaminated oil, wich that is what wmo really is. My union local has a waste oil heater at our training facility, They strain it, heat it, Filter it and it's always had problems, Usually when it's 15 degrees outside. So how can anyone not expect to have problems with it? Mabey it works better in warmer southern climates, i don't know.

Please tell more about the fuel adjustment, I have always wondered about the 14 mpg that it gets, maybe it is too high.

In this case, he's turning it up. Go the opposite way to turn it down. Also, having a vehicle that's in good mechanical shape (I.E. periodic maintenance, correct tire pressures, etc.) can help a lot with fuel economy. Same goes for removing unnecessary weight. I used to roll around with the troop seats in the back of my truck, but after remembering those things weigh somewhere in the neighborhood of 200 lbs, I pulled them out.

Filtering down to at least 5 microns is usually enough. There are several systems that people use here that achieve this level of filtration. Specific to the 6.2L many have had success cutting their diesel with WMO in reasonable % vs. ambiant temperature.
