1971 M35A or 2001 M35A3?? Need opinions!

You do realize that there is no such thing as a 2001 M35A3 don't you? A3s were made from 1993 - 1999 only.
Interestingly enough 3 seconds on Google and I found this

There out there. Or there is a bunch of people selling them under the wrong year/name and I don't see that happening. There was one on eBay just a couple weeks ago too.

And that would also emply that the family friend that has the 2001 that I am looking at in KC is lying.. Don't see that happening either.

So what would they have been upgraded with in 2001 that would give them an upgrade tag? I bet I have seen at least 20 labeled 2000 and 2001's in the last 6 months or so. Is it illegal for them to sell them as 2000 or 2001's? Surely they get registered as a whatever year they were manufactured.

Here's the deal, hoss. You're asking a question we can't answer. The question boils down to which one do you like better because, in all seriousness, either one will meet your needs. There have been a million threads on that topic and at the end of the day it is simply personal preference. If you want people to actually answer this question, you are going to get a million different responses and be back to square one.

Take the offer to drive one of each and then decide for yourself. You already said you know the differences, so there's really nothing we can help you with.

CARNAC has given me a 2002 year of manufacture for one of my M35A3 trucks. Maybe the "manufacture date" from the Army database is something like a put in service date instead.

Why? well if you're gonna be pulling people out a winch would be handy. plus the money you saved not buying the A3 will give you lots of money for upgrades and spare parts and tools. I know the A3 is "newer", but I've seen a lot of practically brand new MRAPs have major break downs with less than 5000 miles. I wouldn't doubt an A3 could have them too. And if you've spend your wad on an A3, how are you preparded for a possible break down. (CTIS I'm looking at you) And besides, A3's are butt ugly even for a military truck. :)razz:) 2cents

(Okay, I'll say something nice about the A3's. They do have power steering which is handy)

I am thinking a A2 would be more fun to drive with the manual... And the more A3's I look at the more I see them with flat tires from the CTIS system leaking! As nice as it would be I can see it would be a big pain in the A$$!

Nobody here can tell you what YOU want. You know the differences and obviously have the money, go search someout and drive the 2.

You respect me, I will respect you that's a promise!. I always feel you can learn something from "senior members" but when comments are made like I can't wait to see the comments on this one basically calling someone an idiot I don't have respect for stuff like that. I am sure I could run laps around a lot of people when it comes to Satellite Technology that I use everyday or even when it comes to a lot of the radio systems/trunking systems that I help set up/sell BUT if someone on here asked me about it or if we were on a different forum that I was a "Senior Member" of and a "newbie" asked an obvious question that has been answered thousands of times before I would still answer it just like I would to anyone else. Respect is a really big thing with me and you can potentially scare/discourage people away from a great community of people just because someone wants to make comments like that. I don't work like that and you will never see a comment come from me that is directed to put someone down or make someone feel out of place.

jtrimmell, Welcome to the site. I am not going to advise you on which one (A2 or 3) to purchase. I say buy a 5-Ton and call it it a day[thumbzup]. Anyway, I do not currently own a Deuce, but if and when I do decide to go that route it will be an A2. I like the "old school-ness" of the A2...just personal preference as I don't feel fully qualified to give more of an opinion on this issue.

Remember, a stupid question is one that goes "un-asked". BTW...I don't believe I was ever hazed when I first started out here.

I agree with myothersanM1, I like the old A2, like the noise, smoke, the manual transmission and the older look. but to each thier own
Only have had mine for a few weeks, so i'm a new here too, but actually have alot of miles driving A2's, long ago, uncle sam owned them....lol.
But power steering is nice, not a fan of automatic trans, although the Allisons we use at work are bullet proof, but when one does need repair, its big bucks. Never been around an A3 so not sure how well the allisons hold up in them, the 3116, we had boat loads of them at work and they did well to.
ok, thats my 2 cents worth..

Simmer down a bit ! If you have really been lurking for some time, you had to see a bit of this coming ! And compared to alot of it, this has been pretty mild in light of the newer " Be nice" recommendations last week !

Again, as mentioned before, the search function is your friend, and it does get easier to use the more you do it !

Also, despite what some folks may say, you WILL be judged by the way that you respond and interact with others even when you may not agree.

To put this in another form, your question is similar to; " I have been around both, read the reviews, compared the nutritional values, but would like to ask all 30 thousand folks if I should have the $2.00 apple pie or the $2.50 gooseberry pie ?"

It is all a matter of taste, If I could afford either, I would start with the higher priced A3, then add an A2 later, due to less of the A3's availability !

Good luck and welcome to the addiction, hope you survive the bumpy good ol' boy start and are not so sensitive as to not enjoy the fun ! :beer:

I like the A2 trucks, simple enough for me to work on, most of the time without the aid of a manual. Our local Sheriff's Office has one with air assist steering and that is a really nice addition. Guess I grew up in the 1960's and when you heard a deuce, it was a screaming deuce, whistler squeal and all. I will say that I thought I wanted the whistler, but now that I have both of them, the D turbo is just fine with me.

The CTIS and Allison are what worry me on the A3 trucks. I have a couple of friends that are Caterpillar specialists and other than the parts cost involved, making the Cat run does not bother me. I work for the city and we have the Cats in a lot of trash trucks, dump trucks and some other equipment. They blow head gaskets in them once in a while, normally from running them hot, but usually the engine outlives the equipment life. These are run by a bunch of guys that do not care, the repair bill is not on them, so the equipment runs as hard as it can. Besides, I am in the A3s are ugly group, but so am I. Glen

But I think I like to drive the A2 a little more then the A3. But I like anything that is Green or Tan...:driver:
I have not worked on the A3 that much but I know there is tons of spare parts for the A2, the A3 is a little harder to find some parts.
