Hi I have a 66 deuce and I was wondering how I could add lights like 12v led back up lights and or light bar/ etc. I also have a heatorcore from a hummer that my grandpa got my AM General that I was thinking about possibly putting in the truck for this winter just running power to a switch for it. not sure if it runs on 12 or 24 but I'm assuming 24.

You could go with a 24 to 12 converter or if it is just lights you are looking for you could go with LEDs that will run from 10 to 30 volts. I am installing some backup lights on my HMMWV and I have a pic of the lights below.

I just got a cheap led light from Amazonian and mounted that on the driver side in the back above the tag. Works great and lights up EVERYTHING behind you. It was rated for 10 to 36 volts I think so no inverter needed.

I am in the process of writing up an enormous how-to article on 24V and 12V compatability issues. Just not quite done yet.

First, if all you wanna' do is add reverse lights and have no other 12V needs, the easiest thing to do is either use some 24V back up lights or LEDs that run from 10-30 volts. So you wouldn't have to worry about making the 12V power source at all.

If you think there are accessories that you might want to add later on that are 12V only (like civilian trailer brake controller capability), then you're going to have to have some source of 12V power.

You can add a third, stand alone 12V battery and charge it with a HMMWV dual voltage output alternator, or you can add a second, 12V alternator that feeds the 3rd battery.

Or you can buy a DC 24V-12V converter. This is easiest and it's what I'd do if I were doing my truck now. Only issue with the converter route is that you need to anticipate the 12V power demands you're going to put on it. If all you need is a cell phone charger, then the cheapest 10A unit will suffice. If you're going to pull a big civilian trailer with electric brakes (12V obvs) and lots of lights and all that, you need a converter that will put out 30-40A+.

On my truck, everything is 24V (reverse lights, midships lights, front floodlight, rear winch, etc.) except for the stuff that had to be 12V. Civilian trailer wiring and brake controller, cell hone chargers, etc.

For larger 12v demands, and to help keep the batteries balanced (Especially since you can run a single 12v batteries in series for 24v, but a number of 12v batteries in parallel for higher 12v demands.) Run a battery equalizer.
You can used one off of buses, etc. for fairly small $ considering that it is very heavy duty!
vann-guard battery equalizer 70-100 is what I have on my 818 to have both 12v and 24v power.

Hammer, quick question about the unit that you are using.... do you need whatever it is that attaches to the multi-pin connector? If so, what is it?

Quick question here, was connecting my 24V to 12V setup over the holiday and only getting 20V to the converter. Do I need to take the ground directly to the battery? I ran the ground to the chassis. Thanks in advance.
