Ordered a kit from Wolverine, but of course he never came through. So now am going to design mounts to replace the stock generator and add a 2nd 12V alternator using a couple of heavy-duty Leese Neville alternators. More info here.

you've got some handy friends there...

I went with the 150 amp 24volt unit from an international and a 100 amp equalizer.

Why couldnt you just put a voltage regulator and run off one battery thats currently on the deuce since they only charge 24volt from the positive terminal on the first battery to the negitive terminal on the second. With putting a volt meter on the positive and negitive post of one battery it only charges 14 volts. Would this work??

Hello Everyone, I myself have been thinking about the 2nd Alt, would want it for in the truck cab use and not the van box. I am guessing an additional alternator would cut the horse power. Anyone know how much power is lost by adding another alternator.t

Thanks GF25, Thats some good info. I was debating on the additional alternator, worried about power loss. I havent decided completly yet. I do want off the grid capabilities, so I plan using some type of solar to recharge batteries for van and trucks 12V needs. The truck has both options, but all that is predicated on original source of power. Ie house/shore or 24V from trucks system. Redundancy isnt a concern so I think the small power loss is worth having the back up op.

My 12 volt alt kit draws very little power.it uses a 10si delco alt..it is not noticable ..if you do both of kits both alts have less rotating weight than the stock gen.

His kits are almost always for sale..........Give him a pm that you want(or are interested in one) and he'll get one...........I know we have been busy with a truck we are working on so I'm not sure if he has been on here very much............(I live 5 minutes from him) I will be talking to him today so if you send a pm with info I will tell him to check it.

Thanks for the quick replies. I'm just asking, I'm not in the market yet. I'm doing my research before I haul off and purchase a Deuce, only to come back here going "so, now what??" like some folks do. I figure, if I get my info first and make a plan to build myself a Deuce, I'll be better for it in the long run.

I've installed several of tm america's alternator kits in my own as well as several other members vehicles. They are top quality, easy to install and don't get in the way when doing PM's.

Just got the kit from TM America and getting ready to get the alternator. After doing some internet reading I came across some info that said the 12si alternator was basically the same dimensionally as the 10si. The difference being the 12si could be had with a 94 amp output vs. 63 amps for the 10si. Would a 12si work? Not that I really need the extra power but it's basically the same cost.

I'm not sure if the mounting on the 12si is the same as the 10si.they make 10si alts all the way up to 250amps.there's is even a 200amp alt-welder set up that pull pal makes that fits . I think the 12si is used on old international scouts and harvesters..it uses a three wire voltage regulator that is exterally mounted that you would need to buy and wire in as well even if it did fit the bracket?

wonder if I'm too late to chime into this thread. the information in this thread is priceless. you guys rock! I too am reading and learning before I purchase my first deuce. I've found several truck companies who fix up and do many upgrades to the trucks they offer. one such site ofers a 12v conversion for $1500. question for you knowledgable folks is, is there a difference between a 12v conversion done by these deuce truck sellers as apposed to the double alt. one 24v alt and one 12v alt?

also, please forgive me for knowing close to nothing about electronics and doing a modification like this, that you guys make sound so easy... but say you bolt on your new 12v alt, get the right belt length and bolt it on and get a couple 12v batteries, but ok then what? how do you wire it up? how to you wire batteries to it and then end up with the ability to run fans and radios and speakers and etc etc.? I bet then is no picture turtorial of a step by step for ignorant folk like myself who are clueless on how to even begine a modification like this?? thanks... and again great thread!!! most of it is way over my head.

My son who was 13 or 14 at the time did most of the work. The big difference between these low cost kits and the conversion you mentioned is MONEY. You'll have less money if you pay 1500 to do it another way. I have had zero issues since I installed mine. The civie alts are cheap and easy to find. Having the third battery has already saved me once when one of my 24 volt system batteries died.

There are a lot of different ways to get 12 volts on a deuce. For my money this is simply the best. Other people have other ideas and that's fine too, but this is what gets it done for me. Cool factor is pretty high too. :)

My 12 volt kit is super easy to install and ultra reliable and really inexpensive too.. As far as wiring it would be near impossible to tell you exactly how to wire your system as there are thousands of accesories you might wanna run .. and everyone is using it for something different.. Not to mention the whole idea of a do it yourself kit relies on someone that can do it yourself.. If doing it yourself is not in your realm of skills having someone who feels more at home doing wiring to help you finish it out.. There are tons of companies that offer wiring kits to make it easy if you wanted to go that path..Painless wiring and many other offer wiring harnesses with fuse blocks and fully labeled wire..But for most guys they know what they are planning on running and have a pretty good idea how to wire it in.If anyone needs help i am always there to talk guys through the install..Sure i could sell you my kit for 2000 bucks and you would feel you are getting something ready for the space shuttle just based off the price and a fancy web site but i choose to offer the highest quality at the lowest possible price and be able to help out more people with this add on..

One more thing the idea of doing a full 12 volt conversion would be a huge mistake in my opinion.Anything run on 12 volts draws twice the amps as it would on 24 volts.. such as starters and high draw things that will end up requiring wires to be doubled in size as well as other things. There is good reason why the military went with 24 volts .. so to me the best set up is running both a 12 and 24 volt system which gives you many bennifits such as having an extra battery in case one failed in the starting system. Or being able to run off the 12 volt side untill the batteries are completely dead and still be able to start the truck which you will not be able to do with a full 12 volt conversion or adding a 24 to 12 volt convertor..
