Getting one that works isn't too bad. The Yanmar engines alone sell for well over $1000 new.
You can't touch a new Yanmar powered generator for under $3000.
The regulators are worth about $100 each if they work, and aren't too hard to fix if they don't. IMO, paying $200-300 for a parts unit isn't a bad deal. Of course, it is much better when you get a good running unit for $200-300.
I was thrilled when I found one of a batch of 701As I bought had a new Yanmar L100 inside. It was missing a few parts and the conversion had not been completed but all the important parts were there. I feel a 3kW gen should have a pull rope option for starting.
