Steel Soldiers now has a few new forums, read more about it at: New Munitions Forums!
That was great; a regular feeding frenzy. Thanks a million. That was 68 pictures of various aircraft in various states of storage. Some I've never seen before, and I was an Air Force brat.
Grumman C-1's and S-2's are being pulled out and reworked for the Argentine Navy. They are getting updated everything, including engines.I was a little surprised to see some stuff so old still intact. Like the radial-engined Navy "mail plane," among other things. The DOSAS airplane was a nice touch, too.
Good catch. I'd forgotten seeing that one by the time I got to the posting window. Yes, I'm sure this is either an arctic rescue airplane or an antarctic resupply airplane. I suspect its logbook is full of interesting stories.Picture 17, in the first batch. the C-130 with the big "03" on it... is that an "arctic" version? looks like sleds or skis or something around the wheels.
No kidding; good eye you got there.Good catch. I'd forgotten seeing that one by the time I got to the posting window. Yes, I'm sure this is either an arctic rescue airplane or an antarctic resupply airplane. I suspect its logbook is full of interesting stories.
IIRC there are essentially two landing gears, one ski, one wheels. they can be operated independent so you don't have the wheels digging in when landing on snow/ice pack. Of course I could be completely wrong. No kidding; good eye you got there.
Didn't even notice them until you pointed it out. The skis are so wide (wider than I would have expected), that I would have figured them as just storage cribbing or something. Are there wheels built into the skis (for take-off and landings off the snow)?

I guess there are two of us now that would like to know:IIRC there are essentially two landing gears, one ski, one wheels. they can be operated independent so you don't have the wheels digging in when landing on snow/ice pack. Of course I could be completely wrong.
It's hard not to love the old Herc's, real war horses if ever there were any. No glamor, but they just get the job done; everywhere and anywhere.Still reigning supreme after years of battlefield victories, AC-130H, Serial No. 69-6569, proudly roared into AMARG today...to rest. Nicknamed "Excalibur," for having the legendary strength of King Arthur's sword, the aircraft is said to be the last AC-130H to retire as well as the last to have served during the Vietnam War. Got to be nice to actually see something leave that place, makes up in a small way for all the ones that wont...A U.S. Marine and Navy "Tiger Team" comprised of personnel from Atsugi Japan to Oceana, Va., tandemly launched two F/A-18Cs today, bringing the number of regenerated F/A-18C aircraft to four since the team arrived in mid-April. A total of five aircraft were withdrawn from long-term storage.
