Thumbs up on the driveshaft removal. I boiled the fluid in my 08 on the way to Aberdeen in 2004 or 5 (do not remember)
While towing it behind my super deuce.
My 915 would start to drink a tad heavy at 62 mph at 2200 rpm. With the 1100's ypu would get a tad more speed as you stated.

Do you know what happens to a Transfer case with 4.56 gears spinning at 3600 RPM? They get very very hot.
An M1008 traveling at 73 mph, the engine is spinning past the governed speed of 3600 RPM. I do not think you traveled cross country with the engine bouncing off the governor for 1000's of miles.

Kinda sounds like a fish story to me.
Be that as it may I know I done it. I don't need to make any stories up. I still drive a stock M1008 5 days a week at work (not at home anymore) Thank God. and travel on the interstate all the time. I travel with traffic at 70-75 all the time. Some trips are 200 miles one way and others are short trips. Sorry I know what the truth is. I have not replaced either engines or transfer cases. I still have the M1028A1 with 173,000 miles on it. Still drives well but due to a few issues it will not pass PA inspection. time for the antique tags. It has been from sea to shing sea and from Ft Polk to Alaska in the past 18 years.

Did about 60 in michigan. 65 in Ohio just because my tires need balanced and that's were the vision started to blur. Anyone ever try the balance rings that go between the wheels?

Here are your RPM's at given speeds in 3rd gear (ratio 1:1 motor/trans) with 4.56's gears and 32 inch tires, the governor is supposed to start letting you know it is there around the 3400rpm mark:

3600=75.6
3500=73.06
3400=70.98
3300=68.89
3200=66.8
3100=64.72
3000=62.63
2900=60.54
2800=58.45
2700=56.37
2600=54.28
2500=52.19
2400=50.11
2300=48.02
2200=45.92
2100=43.84
2000=41.75
1900=39.67
1800=37.57
1700=35.49
1600=33.4
1500=31.31

So you can see hitting 80 is impossible, and 75 is hitting the governor. I think if you hit 73 then that is probably tops. For a cucv to get 16 mpg at 80 mph is impossible, before I did my 700r4 swap only driving 50 to 55 mph back and forth to work 30 miles one way, I could only get 14-15 mpg. After the swap, doing 50-55 to work and back I could get 18-20 mpg. If I did any thing over 60 mph I would only get 16 or less the faster I went.
Don't bother us with facts and numbers. 80mph is only 4K rpm. I mean, 6.2's are just 350's they converted to diesels right? :roll:

I didn't realize that when you put the transfer case in neutral that it locks the front and rear driveshafts together. I pulled a 1009 for an hour behind a 5 ton and the transfer was almost too hot to touch.

Very LOUD. And I will not need to prove anything to anybody here. My friends and family know we done it. The long hard trips were before the truck hit 100K but I still made trips to Camp Lejeune when it had 130K + miles on it. I never ran bigger tires then the stock size and never changed anything on the driveline. I never had a tachometer and never worried about anything. I kept it full of fluids and well maintained. I ran it everyday. and that is all I am going to say about that. You have to know that people have done worse things to them and they still held up. I knew from new that they would only go so fast and they worked fine for me.

When I got mine I knew it wouldn't be a speed demon and they aren't but the the truck gets down the road just fine so why not use them and it pulls what I hook it to encluding a 36,000 lbs weight sled and thankfully didn't break anything.

I have hit 80 with my M1008..Of course I run 35's with an NV4500.
No way one of these trucks is running 80 mph stock and staying in one piece. Sorry, not buying it.

Part of the noise issue is the un muffled intake. Without a throttle plate to restrict flow, Diesel engines have a good bit of intake noise. The manifold is tuned for 3000 rpm so as you go past 55 mph in the one ton, it really starts making noise. But the engine isn't going to destruct unless you are still running a 1984 harmonic damper.

Enough said. I am not trying to start anything. I never had the speedometer calibrated but ran the same stock set up since new and it has 173K on it now. I never thought of defending myself because I have done it in several trucks over the years. Did 70 today with the firewood on the truck. I didn't do 70 on the logging trail. My
son tries to with his truck at times. The speedo is pretty accurate according to the smart phone. How accurate is it? + - a few MPH.:hammer: down. Snafu and Fubar galore.
Funny you should say that about the harmonic balancer on any of the CUCV's. I have owned and I have had 100+ CUCV's.

A stock in good condition GM balancer is probably better than a chinese Dorman.
That said I run a fuild dampr

Not to fight. But I drive these trucks at 75-80 all the time. I am serious. I have been doing it for years. I never blew one up. I drove them cross country with the stock 4:56 gears pulling another CUCV on the tow bar. Did all day and night several times. I never had any issues. I get some throttle surge when I let up at 80 but that is normal according to the GM shop manual. I change my oil every 2K and keep them serviced well. I towed an M1010 to north west Canada back in the late 90's and drove my M1028 6500 miles in 10 days. I had the oil changed twice at a truck stop parking lot. It never was low on oil and I was getting about 16 MPG average over the whole trip. I just never gave it any thought. I may just be lucky. it always reminds of my boat when I have it planed out. Just keeps running and running.
Not to further a fight but from what I have heard the speedometers read high in a CUCV, as much as 25MPH high.

Please post a pic of a GPS unit showing us that you ran one that fast please.

I'd like to get one someday if you can prove they go that fast.

I don't have a dog in this fight, and I don't even have an opinion of which dog is going to win, but I know I had a Datsun that would wrap the speedo at ordinary speeds. That speedo topped at 140, so I'm pretty sure it wasn't dead on the money.

Given how accurate (not) some speedos can be, I have to agree with the GPS comment.

The defense rests your Honor. Although I do like a good challenge. I have a really good sense of humor. But please I am going with traffic. And occasionally I do look over and see other peoples digital speedometers and they are not that far off from what I am reading on the CUCV. Doghead I could not see what you are sending me to. It is OK if you guys don't believe me. I am fine with that. craigs checks22.jpg I am not out to prove anything. Which one should of these should I drive to show you the GPS? You left yourself open for that one. [thumbzup]:funny: You just said a picture of GPS showing spped. how would I prove beyond doubt what I am driving.

Stock M1008 doing 70+ mph, not going to happen, period. It runs out of gear plain and simple. Your speedo probably has an issue. I would verify with GPS or go old school with mile markers on the highway. My speedo will occasionally go 10mph faster on the highway. The needle sweeps back and forth. Not sure how it picks up speed. Maybe the cable has some stretch to it. I wouldn't claim it as a performance gain though.
