As some of you know, the m819 had a clutch issue (clutch NOT doing its clutch thing) about 10 miles out from its home LZ, after leaving the Meet, Greet and Eat Sat., Went to the LZ, got Swiss's gasser m62 (a 5t wrecker for those who do not know what a m62 is), it did fine going to the down 819 (a 5t tractor wrecker for those who do not what a m819 is), hooked up, all is good, NOT, the m62 decided to shut down, got it going ran great for about 1/4 mile, shut down, this time in traffic, Swiss shows up, grabs tools, starts working on the 62, after a bit, the 62 stars then dies, more screwing with it he gets it started and it seem to want to stay running, I tell him "put the hood down, get off the truck because I am rolling", the 62 did not even grunt pulling the 36,000 lb. 819 up the hill, made it about 5 miles when the 62 decided to shut down (like you turned off the switch each time it shut down), at this point it was decided that this circus was down for the count, called in the BIG hook (pulling TWO wreckers), which got everything to the home LZ, The 819 lost its clutch at 1500, pulled into LZ about 2100. All this time till the big hook pulled out with the circus train, I Had a Gainesville LEO on site, all I can say is thank you because she could have turned a bad day into a REAL bad day. Told the big hook I do not care JUST get this miss on the front yard (lawn ART).
Next day got the m62 started, then died, a few more starts and deaths, figured all well on to plan B when I come up with it, in the mean time a friend came over so I could look at his brakes, that done, thought I would give the m62 ONE MORE TRY before I set up my truck shop on the front lawn, well she STARTED AND KEEP RUNNING, not waiting for air, in gear she went, spun some tires getting the m819 rolling, and pull it though the gate, not being one to push my luck shut the 62 down with the 819 inside the gate by 8". I guess the m62 DID finish the mission it was tasked to do. NOTE the m62 and the m819 are STILL connected by the towbar and chains.
Today, I pulled the 819 trans and clutch, the pressure plate and clutch have less then 1000 miles on since I install them back in 06, I found the driving hub separate from the disk, it looked like the rivets just Unriveted, no sign of distortion, no bent or sheared rivets, do wallowed holes, no bits of metal any where, no metal dust, just NOTHING, the only thing I did see is RUST {old rust) on the mating surfaces of the hub and the disk. So tomorrow I am going to install another disk and put things back together.
This whole event got me thinking (I know, bad idea), 36,000lb, let alone almost 80,000 lb. GVW on a SINGLE disk clutch which would be REALLY hard on the disk clutch, does anybody know of a TWIN disk clutch set up that could be used as a replacement foe the single disk setup, it would have to be the THIN style pressure plate ?????
I really want to thank my wife who stayed in the cold till arriving at the LZ,
Really need to thank Swiss, who came out to help, A BIG HELP,
And officer Van of the GAINESVILLE PD. who REALLY worked WITH US dealing with the circus, SHE put off her boss from calling THEIR big hook 1/2 a dozen times.
