923 fuel tank drain plug size

I put a second fuel tank on my 923 in place of the large tool box. Fits very nice. I'm going to run a crossover line through 1" square tube to protect it and a ball valve on each tank. I pulled the drain plug out and low and behold it looks like 3/8" pipe thread but its not. It's a hair smaller and a 3/8" street L won't screw in. I had to run a 3/8"NPT tap through it. Anyone else encountered this ??
