929A2 Dump Truck problems

I finally purchased a 929 a2 dump truck after watching them forever. Went to pick it up but was unable to get the fuel system primed. Talked to the seller today and they said they can get it started now. I'm planning on a 300 Mi trip to pick it up. Does anyone have any suggestions for parts, filters, etc to take to avoid being unprepared for the worst? The fuel system must have a leak somewhere but I have to get it home to work on it.

Food for thought...

A ~300 mile emergency tow is going to be much more than a 300 mile planned tow.

I limped a M51A2 (M39 series dump) 44 miles home with bad fuel/filters. I swore I'd never risk that again.

Now for your issue. The M929 has dual tanks with a selector valve in the cab. The orings are notorious to fail on them allowing air in. If the seller has an air compressor. Use your hands to cup a blow gun over the tank and allow it to pressurize the fuel system. Make sure you have the primer line disconnected so fuel can flow out. You'll find a leak much faster in the system with pressurized fuel.

If it were me, I'd try to check the fuel system in that manner. If you spot a leak, fix it. Then go for a short test drive. Then if you feel it's resolved, drive it. But if you don't find the leak, I'm not sure I'd risk it...

Thanks for the advice. I will take a portable compressor. Fixing the problem would be great. I'm sure 300 miles will take forever even if everything goes great. Im excited about the truck but wish it were home already. I considered getting a quote on shipping but figured I couldn't afford it.

I'm not trying to hamper you, but make sure it's 100% ready to run before you head out. As long as the lines haven't been tampered with. Most of it is hardline that wouldn't leak. There's just a number of fittings at the selector valve under the cab as well as the valve that typically leak.

If you can't afford having it shipped, you'll not be happy if you have to get it towed.

Get it shipped. Driving an unknown truck is an adventure, and that could be good or bad. Be careful. I had a friend who drove an M35A2 home from Charleston, SC. Well, once he got it home we looked it over. Most of the bolts were either missing or loose on the steering box.

Good advice. I just got off the phone with someone local that's willing to pick it up Monday morning. Hope to check it out Monday evening.

Just unloaded my new m929a2. Had it shipped here from GL lot. Appears when they were moving it prior to loading it they ran the forks thru the oil pan and sheared off some air lines not to mention breaking half the plastic off the steering wheel. WHAT A DISSAPPOINTMENT!!! Has anyone heard of such terrible treatment of equipment? Any suggestions on how to handle this? WOW!

Did you preview the truck before buying from GL? Do you have proof that damage happened after the auction?

Sad truth is, you signed for it as is allowing pick up.

A search would have shown this frequent happening of forklift damage.

They were not able to get it started as they assured me they would have it running when driver arrived. The driver told me they were lifting the front end up with a fork truck to turning the wheels prior to loading it. They then shoved it on the lowboy with a loader. There is considerable damage. This whole process has been bad from the start. I guess I am looking for parts now!

I did not preview prior to purchasing. I did go and inspect after the auction. All of the damage was done today with the fork truck.

I don't see loading information in the old listing. I'm sure it doesn't matter as they listed it as "running and operating" when it was purchased too.

What it was listed as, and what you signed for and accepted are two different things. The later being your legal recourse.

I will call them first thing in the morning and see what happens. I left a message with them as soon as it rolled in the driveway. Took lots of pictures before unloading it. Oil was still dripping out of the pan when it got here.

Since you (your shipper) took delivery of the truck you probably won't get any refunds. I think the only way you can get your money back is if you refuse the truck and then you make a claim back to GL. It's a crap shoot. I have always looked over items or vehicles BEFORE I signed the paper to remove the property. If someone is picking it up, they need to briefed to inspect for damage and what to do if they find some.

This is one of those learning experiences we all hear about.

Good luck getting it fixed.
