Ladies and gentleman, boys and girls, I have some questions and was just curious if anyone had similar issues.

I have a 1992 M998 with a 12v Cummins swap and 4L80E. Love this beast.

1.) I have noticed that my fuel gauge is off... as in, when it reads "E" I can only put 12 gallons of Diesel in. So its basically half a tank off... Both the sending unit and gauges are 0-90. Before I drop the tank and check the Ohms, any simple things to try first?

2.) When it comes to heating I noticed that the two "rods" that you adjust for defrost/floor heat and temperature are not the same length. The lower one, Heat temp, only comes out half way. Should it be like this or am I binding on something? I will pull apart this weekend and check but I just wanted to see if anyone else had the same issue.

3.) My windshield washer does not actually spray fluid. I only have whipper usage. no cleaning function. Is there a way to verify its not a simple fix or do they just go bad and I need to buy an entire new one?

4.) I have been debating a method to get rid of the ruts that rain creates in my soft top. I have seen some people have used wood but i wondered about plexiglass? Any ideas for this project? I am up for all ideas!

5.) I appreciate all of you for taking time to assist a newbie. I'm bad about uploading photos but I will update this post later with pictures!

Have someone operate the heater pull knob while you watch the water valve in the engine compartment. It is by the coolant overflow tank. You can then move it by hand to see if it moves more than the lever is moving it. My first HMMWV had a corroded valve. I just used pliers to open it in the fall and close it in the spring.
Push the wiper knob in. Can you hear the washer fluid pump buzzing? If so, give it a few seconds to get the fluid up to the windows.

Welcome to the Madness
1.)We have an 86 M998 and our gauge is spot on. Check your grounds.
2.)Concur with Action, check your connections near the heater core
3.)Ours acts curious sometimes. I have had to press in and then wiggle the switch (dirty potentiometer maybe). But try that
4.)I installed a power converter between the A and B pillars on truck center line. I use a piece of plexiglass to keep water off the electrical connections. It has been an interesting battle to secure the plexiglass since it is not the width of the truck. Vibration makes it interesting

Hope that helps

If the washer pump doesnt make noise, fold the windshield down and clean the contacts. Check rubber for condition. Some have installed washers for temporary fix until new part is ordered.

All fuel cells and fuel tanks have variations in the position of the float and arm that holds the float. If that arm has a bend in it, it might give you a false reading that has nothing to do with electrical and everything to do with mechanical maladjustment.

Before dropped the tank I'd try a gauge replacement. If you have Faria gauges they are notoriously inaccurate. In my HMMWV when the tank reads E I can only feed it about 18 gallons so technically I should have a 7 gallon reserve. LOL On a road trip to Portland a few years back about the time we hit the Oregon border my oil pressure gauge went to zero. At the MVPA convention I found another new oil pressure gauge and installed it. It read half of what the original one did but it got me home. I installed a second gauge and it read the same as the original so it's hit or miss with these gauges. If you can fine a Stewart-Warner gauge you'll have better luck. They seem to be a better quality gauge.

As for your windshield washer, their infrequent usage causes them to crud up fairly quickly for some reason. Replacing the whole tank/pump is costly but if you look around there are replacement pumps that can fix your problem that cost around 1/3 what a HMMWV pump costs. Check the lines and nozzles too as they want to crud up too.

The defrost lever does pull out farther than the heat lever. Defrost lever, pull all the way out for defrost both windows, Pull all the way out and push half way back in for defrost drivers side only, push all the way in for heat out heater and foot ducts.

A friend suggested the exact same thing. I will get the tank lowered and see what I can find out. Thanks again!

Let us know when your hood finally snaps off the hinges.
Yeah I had an issue with the prop but it was corrected the following day

Yeah I caught his sideways remark lol

So I discovered that one company makes my gauges and the other makes my fuel sending unit. I'm going to see if I can replace the gauge from the same company as the one that makes the sending unit. If it works, then I'm golden! But I also wonder if somehow its just a float issue? hit the brakes the other day and it went from E to 1/4 tank for a brief second.

I appreciate it, I just feel mine doesn't pull out as far as everyone else.

Jtalbot, if you drop the tank, look inside to see if the baffle has come loose from the bottom. A loose baffle could have bent the arm on the float (if older style) and also allow the fuel to move quickly away from the float when stopping.
