Steel Soldiers now has a few new forums, read more about it at: New Munitions Forums!
Im using 550 cord tied in a hitch on the end of the antenna which is tied to the passenger side brush gaurd. I have extra slack to tighten and loosen as needed. How are you all attaching the whip when you want it down? or bent down?
550 cord??? You'll have to help me with that one. I'll be using it on my M1009, and it has the mount right behind the passenger door. I can see where that antenna would be more pron to break than a stainless whip. But it sure fits the truck. I ordered another to put on my A3.
Lookin' good Allan! ID be curious to know how that long whip works for you. Did you do an SWR pairing check on it?
The whip works well. I did use a meter to check the SWR. This radio comes with one built-n that seems to work well. I had to cut the end section of the mast (MS-118 ) a few inches to make the whole thing from the bottom of the base to the tip about 110 inches. SWR nearly 1:1 in the higher channels. Around 1:1.9 in channel 1. As I understand it, that means the whip is a tad short. I can lengthen it slightly by unscrewing the antenna sections some. But I'm happy with what I have.
Ramcatdoc - I have the same side mount on my 1009 and just got my AB15 base in. I saw you have a plate that the ab15 mounts to that mounts to the truck mount. Where did you get that plate or did you fab one up?Just an update to let y'all know I have my CB set up, tuned, and operating. Attached are some pictures.
Thanks to all of you for your help, large and small.
The main issue I had turned out to be a short in the antenna cable, which was brand new. With a voltmeter, a lot of coaching, and some logic, I was able to isolate the problem and replace the cable.
The moral is: if at first you don't succeed, ask for help, scratch your head, and sleep on it for a while.
Yeah, I had a local machinist fab two pieces for me. The first is the roughly 5x5 inch square on the mounting bracket. I made him a cardboard template with outlines for the four bolts and the center hole. I already had the mount intended for the AB15, but felt it was much easier to add the plate to the existing mount than to put a new mount on the truck. I used this mount to outline the center hole in the template, but you can just measure your AB15's diameter at the junction between the two halves.Ramcatdoc - I have the same side mount on my 1009 and just got my AB15 base in.
