Accessory drive seal leaking bad on cummins engine in M818

When I got my M818 truck the paperwork said it needed a new oil seal on the front of the accessory drive. I confirmed this when I changed the front driver's fender. My new fender and paint job got a great anti rust covering of engine oil during my recent trailer pickup. I need to get it fixed before driving it anywhere else. I looked in the manual and it shows I have to remover the radiator to get access. Anyone done this seal before? Do I really need to take out the radiator? I plan to get the seal from the local cummins dealer. Do I need any special tools? Cummins specialist please speak up.

Thanks
Chuck

Not according to the manual. It lists using a puller to remove the pulley giving access to the seal and oil slinger. Do not turn the engine while the pulley is off. when you reassemble tourque to 270 to 340 lbs./ft.

Refer tp Tm9-2320-260-34-1 page 3-18.(available here on this site)

Well, I got the "seal" from cummins today in the mail. It is marked as a seal on the paperwork and the zip lock bag it is in but what I have is a thick metal washer. No rubber for a seal at all. It looks galvanized. Not brass or any other soft metal. I will have to call them tomorrow to get the proper seal.

There will be a seal and a flat, rubber coated washer. The seal is pushed into the front cover, and the "washer", or the slinger will go between the gear and the end of the pulley, creating the seal between the shaft/gear and the pulley. Here, a pic, hope it helps. As for tools. A regular t-bar puller to pull the pulley off, and a special installer to install it. For anyone interested, I think I have two extra installers. $35 with shipping, and it is yours.

Wil,
The seal I am talking about is the one that goes in the front cover where the belt pulley attaches to the front of the shaft. What I need is number 16 on this page.

There is an installer for the seal, but you can just use a ball peen. Push it in 'till the outside face of the sael is flush with the housing. Make sure you install the new slinger and the sleeve on the pulley...#70 in the last post...sorry, gotta learn to read instead of just looking at pics.

Will,
This is what I got. Is this the slinger you are talking about or did they just send me the total wrong part?

Thanks
Chuck

I plan to take the old seal out and take it in. I tried to do the easy thing and order it over the phone. At first he quoted me $900. I told him that was a little steep for a seal. He then said he was quoting me a price on an accessory drive instead of the accessory drive seal.

hi again, i relpaced the bushing behind the seal as well.
accessory drive wil have a small amount of play, this is normal.
if yours shakes back and forth an eighth inch or so, put in the new bushing.

It doesn't matter if the engine turns while the seal is out or being pulled out. It is only a seal, nothing to do with timing. But, if the complese accessory drive is out, not a good idea to turn the engine, only for the tune up procedure. The seal is in the cover. You can't remove a seal from one engine and put it in another, it get ruined when it's removed.

Thanks Will. I really want to be able to pull it apart and put it together without having to go to the Cummins place in between. I may try to go tomorrow morning.

Thanks
Chuck

In the diagram above the part number is listed as 211255. My invoice says 211255 and lists it as a seal. The zip lock bag has 211255 on it also. I really think they had the wrong part in the bag on accident.

Will,
Just to be sure, you say I need 60 and 70 from your diagram in addition to 16 on my diagram? If you can help me out with the part numbers before tomorrow morning I would appreciate it.

Thanks
Chuck

Will,
I have decided to do the crankshaft front seal also. Does it also have the sleeve like the belt pulley on the accessory shaft? The diagrams leave a little to be desired. I would also like to get one of your installers from you PM me with info for payment. I would like to paypal to move things along faster. At any rate let me know. I will pm a copy of this post.

Thanks
Chuck
