we could talk about how to get rid of the shear pins, but it seems like you're set on the other winch. good luck, take pics.

math. use the intended hydraulic pump and motor specs, winch ratio, desired line pull, and a couple hydraulic effeciencies to calculate the required pressure of the system. then set the pressure relief valve to this pressure via guage and you're done - the system will 'release' at the pre-determined pressure which equals max desired line pull. no shear pin needed; it will just seem to 'stall' when line pull is exceeded without damage.

with the equipment that i intend to use, i know that if i set the relief to 2050 psi the i will have exactly 10k lbs line pull at full drum. i didn't invent this - i have a spreadsheet that does all this for me.

the modification just requires bolting on a hydraulic motor with a coupling to mate the two shafts. these can be obtained.

i've seen them here, but mostly on ebay. not quite as desireable when there is no PTO and linkage to go with.

shipping can be tough - i forgot to consider that.
 
first take out 1000 bucks cash ,,build a mount for your hyd motor use at least 60 heavy roller chain put the same tooth sprockets on your winch shaft and your motor shaft if you have at least a 3500 in lb motor hook up your valve body ,your pump, your hoses , fill your hyd resevor happy winching
 
well maybe i dont know to much but i do know ive probly used winches 3 to 4 thousand times over the 35 years ive been in the oil patch . road building and logging . these winches are not somthing sent down by the gods to screw with your head , if you have any skill with angles and basic mechanical skills and a bit of respect for them there easy and safe to use

To me safety is job one... Its great to not have a shear pin but doent help get the truck unstuck if you are dead cuz the cable broke from over loading it....The biggest problem with the stock winch is the lack of knowledge ...It seems to me 99.9999% of problems with the stock winch are user error ..Everyone should read and carry a copy of the rigging and recovery manual before doing any winching..If you follow those guide lines you will almost never break a shear pin...there is a good reason the stock winch comes with so much cable they are made to be used with a snatch block or two....snatch blocks are needed for most pulls either to increase the capacity or to get the proper angle..No matter what winch you decide to use there are good and bad about it ...All you can do is make an informed decision based on your research..:driver:
 
yes safety is important . and if anybody thinks they cant put a big enough hyd motor to blow up a deuce winch they are mistaken. i have a 4500 psi pump on my backhoe and if somone bought one of those and hooked it up to a 200 hp deuce .they could do serius damage to themselves. some mile markers pulls 10000 lbs at 1500 psi think what could happen at 3 times rated pull no matter which one you pick hyd or pto or electric do some research . i have seen the sides blown out of valve banks because sombody put washers under the relief springs .

Exactly my point! A newbe by themself can get in big trouble real quick. It is real easy for those who have used this type equipment for years to forget about the learning curve they went through. As my dad would say: "the school of hard knocks"

The 18000 lb EE winches I find on ebay cost more than my truck. I think I would like one but if I do the math I can't afford one. Do I look in the wrong places?

i see this comment or similar often around here. i understand that these trucks can be had for dirt-cheap. but that doesn't mean that other equipment will be (or even should be) as relatively inexpensive. it's not logical to compare a piece of equipment from another industry to the cost of your surplussed MV.

let's face it; no one in their right mind would have expected that (5 years ago) you can buy an 18000lb winch for $800-1600 dollars, period.

yes, this can be an inexpensive hobby to enter. but once you want to make modifications by grafting inter-industrial equipment onto these vehicles.... well, you gotta pay to play.

Amen. I've spent many many times what I paid for Mah Deuce, turning it into what it is, and will become. The price we pay for these vehicles does not reflect their real value. Not trying to tell anyone else how they should spend their money, but I don't have any qualms about dumping it into mine.
