Alternatives to NOS wire harnesses?

I'm thinking about replacing my harness, but I'm not really excited by the prospect of paying $250 for a NOS harness that's been sitting on a shelf for 10-30 years. Feels like I'd be trading in one old harness for another that's slightly less worn out. Are there any other options out there?

Just exactly what's wrong with the harness you have now? You can buy new male and female ends and clean it up yourself.

Considering how the mil packs stuff, I wouldnt be too worried about an NOS harness.

All the connectors look like they're on the edge of snapping off if I breathe on them the wrong way. The insulation is dried out. I figure instead of replacing the connectors 1 by 1 and dealing with electrical gremlins I can just get a new harness and not worry about it.

I believe most of the harnesses out there are more like 5 year old NOS, not 25 year old NOS.

My 2 ebay rear tail light harnesses were pretty recent.

Just installed a NOS harness and it was like it was made yesterday. All the wires were fresh and pliable, not cracking and/or brittle.

Sure you could make your own or have someone make a new one for you, but the harness I got was in perfect shape. I don't think these are actually very old.

Where did you get yours? How long did it take you to R&R it?

Get the connectors and make your own... including improvements like adding work light for cargo area, a keyed switch on dash, a circuit for 12V accessories, wire & switch for backup lights, etc....

Got mine from Erik's Military Supply. Took me about 4 hours in total to install. Should have been half that, but had some stuck bolts for some of the wire hangers that simply didn't want to budge.

I just ordered a rear wiring harness on ebay. It came in and was beautiful. Brand new in the plastic bag. It even smelled new. I was pleased. Oddshot came over and we installed it. It was a little easier with no bed on the back of the deuce. It took us about an hour to remove all the bolts and hangers, remove the old one, install the new one and reinstall the hangers. They are typically running between $45 and $75 each for a rear harness. Im glad everything is new now on the rear.

I picked a up complete front wiring harness for $100 at Findlay! Didn't really need it, but will be installing it this summer.
I thought it was a fantastic price, and at the same time helped a steel soldier out.

That is indeed a great price. I paid over twice that, then again...I actually needed it pretty bad.
