Just some thoughts.... yes it will work. The 700R4 transmission is a good transmission but the early ones 1981-84 are known to be problimatic and thus the cause for people to say they are crap. If you are going through the process of pulling the transmission take the time and get it rebuilt by a repitable transmission shop and have them do all the upgrades that GM put into the transmissions over time. Will save you headaches down the road. Other than that. Have fun, post lots of pics and what not.

Thank you all for the input,i will do a step by step with picture's,also i had planned on having the transmission rebuilt with all the upgrades. I have not put alot of thought about a shifter or take the colom from the donor vehicle, any idea's about aftermarket shifter's? thank's again.

Steering column does not need to be changed - just the indicator panel in the dash (if you care about the proper display)

Won't you have a detent mismatch between the column and the transmission? I guess as long as the neutral detent is in the right spot you are alright. When I considered doig the swap on mine I was told by a tranny rebuilder friend of mine that the column would need to be changed so you did not have issues with the manual selector in the valve body being not fully engaged. I never did the swap on mine so I can't say for sure.

Detents are on the transmission itself. The way the linkage is designed it works fine. I am not saying there not a difference in columns, but that the stock CUCV column works just fine. I can get to all gears in it. The indicator even was in the appropriate spot (before it quit working)

I was able to re-use my driveshafts....

My lockup is wired via a toggle switch - but DO NOT do that on an older 700R4 - you will burn it up.

driveshafts might go in there but there is a difference in lenght from the 400 to the 700 i want to say they are like 1 inch difference..just make sure they are ok to run with the rear shaft should be measured by putting the yolk in the trabsfer case push it all the way in .Then pull it back 3/4 to 1 inch then measure center to center..if it is to long it can bottom out on the splines and kill the bearings and thrust washers in the transfer case or even break the trans case..if it is to short it can make the tail bushing walk out or cause a vibration and in turn break the trans case..as for the lock upp wiring there is about four different ways the 700 was wired inside .Depending on yr and app. it could be wires for 2cd,third, or forth gear lock up .It might require switched power or switched ground or both. You can wire it differently ..if you get a normally open pressure switch and put it in the forth gear pressure port you can the run a switched -fused power wire to the lock up soloniod then run the ground to the pressure switch and the other wire from the switch to ground..Or you can use a self grounding normally open pressure switch and not have to use the wire from ground to the switch...there are several place that sell kits to take care of the wiring part of it...The stock chevy trucks used a vacumn switch and the pressure witches and in the later years the computer had the ability to turn the lock up on if the temp was running hot

You gotta love that high tec cable system for the indicator.:roll::roll:
