After reading that i think i'll stick with gl-1........thanx gringeltaube...

CT i would guess the drain plug would be a good spot,unless you want to drill and tap a new spot?if you don't have a pto i guess you could put it in the cover plate???

If you are still interested in the original topic of gear ratio, I have a Spicer Wolverhampton England 3053 on my work bench with the top cover off. If you need to know some of the specifics regarding the gear ratio, let me know and I will try to figure it out.

Where I am, GL1 is some spendy juice. I found some Caterpillar lube that's yellow metal safe (that's the most important criterion) and rings in about 45 bucks for the 5 gallon pail. Of course, my tranny (6855) is a big thirstier than your standard deuce tranny, but still.

Welcome to this very best site, Cameron.
As we always say: still learning! ...and trying to share knowledge if possible.
So, if you would do us a big favor, mark input and output shafts and turn the input shaft 12 complete revs. while counting how many revs. the output shaft did. (If it was exactly 16, the o.d. ratio would be 0.75).
The other way is counting teeth on a) input shaft gear/ b) countershaft 4th drive gear, c) countershaft 5th gear/ d) mainshaft 5th gear. I.e. the 3053A is a) 29T/ b) 42T, c) 46T/ d) 25T. Let us know what you found.

I did the test of turning the input shaft and counting the revolutions. The input shaft turned exactly 11 times for 14 at the output and 12 for approximately 15.25. My math gives a ratio of approximately .7857 to 1.

Cameron, thanks for the info. Sure it's a straight 3053 (no A)? Because yours is pretty much the same ratio as the 3053A. (25/46*42/29 = 0.7871) :?

Still wondering what ratio houdel has in his gearbox.

Fantastic. I never realised they were made in the UK. If I'm able to get the parts easily, then an iffy 3rd gear doesn't sound too bad after all.

My Girlfriend is from Wolverhampton too....

I read that thread. Royal Purple Max-Gear 75W90 and it says SPECIFICALLY "great for manual transmissions requiring GL-4 or GL-5 Fluids" and "Meets performance requirements of MIL-L-2105E".

SO, using those EXPENSIVE LUBRICANTS could save your tranny. I would also consider using PROLONG additive (use the one for the oil, not the automtic transmission).

As were all are whom we are this debait will rage on forever... However I just swapped my trans over to Synthetic today and DAMN what a diffrence in shifting!!! More like a Ford Ranger than a Deuce!!!

Syntetics to deuce tranny?

Not all synthetics are based the same and not all trannys are used the same way or worn to the same level. May be you can run synt. gear oil forever in your tranny and never have any problems...

For being a typical truck tranny using common GL-1, I would say shifting is fairly easy, up or down, hot or cold. And yes, synt. oil improves shifting. But remember, there are real week points like that third gear spinning directly on the shaft. Who could tell us what kind of lube/additive is best for that particular spot? All I know is that my buddy burned two trannys using synthetic and that he successfully went back to normal straight mineral SAE90.

Dman and Gman had the opposite extremes of possibilities to what can happen with using synthetics.

Having said that, I have experienced it for myself. Using Syn in my tranny/TC/engine/axles IS on the list. And I'm REALLY particular about which brand. Royal Purple or nothing.

It's just so expensive. I will be saving up for it for a while, as a full lubrication change will run about $500. BUT I hope to NOT have to do it very often. Say once every three years. So spread out over that time frame, less than $200 a year is not that bad. It's like my tires. If you spread the cost of the tires out over the life of my ownership, then it too is less than $200 per year. So $400 a year in tires and maintenance costs isn't that bad.

Granted, I have to 'cough it up' in large chunks, but still, what's it worth to you?

Yes, I know, I know, if GL-1 was good enough 50 years ago (go over to the Conversations forum and see what it was like 100 years ago).

We have an English built 3053 in one deuce. We also notice the higher road speed mentioned in other posts above. We have no problem starting out in second gear with reasonable load, or unloaded.
