I have two of these. One was in the back of one of the trucks and it was broken at the bend. The other (pictured) normally hangs on the drivers window right side support thumb screw. It is not part of the window assembly. The broken one was in the bed of a non winch truck. The one pictured is in the winch truck (AKA, Vietnam Tribute). Does anyone know what it's for?:?: Also, is it appropriate to be hanging off the thumbscrew on my Vietnam War tribute truck?:?: I don't even know where to begin looking to find one in the -20P.

I wonder if we could do one of those Wiki thingys on "What is this" threads?:?::?:

looks like a EXTRA hair pin (retaining pin) could be used on linkage

My first thought was a hair pin for Brunehildafat lady sings. Then I thought maybe linkage as you did, but none of the linkages on the trucks that I have have anything that needs a steel pin this big. Thought it might be for one of the shackle pins but they are way smaller. The front shackle pins are tiny (about .040 in steel wire) and none of my rear shackles have pins; they're all bolts with self locking nuts on them.

Maybe off a wrecker or some other truck? The truck that had the one hanging on the thumbscrew was last assigned to a Kansas National Guard Tank unit. The broken one came from the 835th Construction (?) Battalion, a NoDak National Guard unit.

If I remember correctly, there should be 1 hole drilled into the center stud that supports the spare tire in the "stored" position, pretty sure it goes in there to prevent the spare from dropping off in the event of the nuts working loose.

Let me see if I can find a pic.......

You can just barely make out the hole in the tapered center support stud.

I have used such hair-pins instead of the original cotter pins, for the rear bumper shackles. The size of the pictured one looks about right.

To AMGeneral: I cannot remember ever seeing such a "tapered center support stud" on the (old) M35 spare tire carriers I have here. ..... Very curious to know.

EDIT: ah OK..., I see we are talking about M135 stuff. Not familiar with them but will check the books.

Problem Solved...maybe

I went at it from a different angle. Since I couldn't find anything on the truck (M-35) I went with possible attaching equipment that could be installed on the trck...nope, didn't make sense. I looked at the m-211 and the pin mentioned is too small and I found these in the M-35. not saying there isn't one installed somewhere on the M-211, just don't know where it could be. That being said, all I have are cargo trucks, Nothing fancy. And the winch wasn't the deciding factor as there was a broken pin in the bed a non winch truck. My Wife looked at it and said fifth wheel pin. TM 9-2330-202-14&P, Figure 17, item 7, Pin, Lock. It's the lock pin for the front support leg of a M-101 or some variation included in the TM. Now all that is needed is for someone who has a M-101 trailer to verify they have a big *** pin hanging on the chain up by the support leg.

Makes sense. If the pin is prone to breakage, always have a spare somewhere close at hand. I still carry a tail wheel lock pin for a H-60 Blackhawk, which is prone to breakage when the tow team gets in a hurry and forgets to pull the pin... not that I've ever done such a thing:whistle:
