Does anyone out there have the 3053 5 speed tranny with the 5th gear being a .78:1 over drive?

Does it give you a higer top end? How about just normal running? Quieter?

Thx in advance. jim

My truck has the overdrive.... Anyone else? :)

I think all the multi-fuels have the overdrive tranny. Some gassers might have it also, would improve the top speed on a gasser. Multi's redline at 2600 rpm, not sure about the gassers, maybe 3500 to 4000?

.79 to 1 stock is excellent then. I'm thinking I have read a bunch of incorrect numbers posted from other's memories in several different posts over the last few months.

As far as I know the 3053A transmissions behind the multifuel engines are all built the same: 29 teeth input shaft gear, 42 t countershaft drive gear, 46 t countershaft fifth speed and 25 t main shaft 5th speed gear. Take 1000 rpm from engine, multiply by 29, divide by 42, again multiply by 46 and divide by 25: 1270 rpm at the output or 27% overdrive. 1000 rpm at the output would require 787 rpm from engine which means it has a .79 fifth overdrive.

The gasoline M35s all came with the 3052 tranny. I've tried once to run a 3053A behind a stock gasoline engine: no way, the overdrive 5th is just to strong for that low compression engine to maintain constant speed on a flat highway.

From what I've found from different posts in different sites-

3052 is early gas REO ONLY
3053 is early diesel and perhaps non turbo and .85:1 overdrive 5th
3053A seems to be what is found behind any of the turbo multifuels and repowers.
3053B is supposed to have a .75: 1 overdrive but only a 4.5:1 1st instead of like 6:1. I could swear at one point I layed eyes on one of these before I had my deuce and was putting a 3053A in my M715...but I cannot source that 'B' transmission again.

thanks buddy thats exactly what i was looking for .now the next question is can you switch fifth from the 3053 in place of the forth gear in the 3052 .thus giving you a sightly overdriven 3052 i think it would give you a od of.93 or somewhere in that area:roll:i would think it could be doable since the other gears are the same part number i would guess by the nut on the back of the couter shaft that the gears are pressed onto the counter shaft

Yes, you can switch them. Counter-gears are pressed on and held in place by a key and snapring.
Technically not a problem at all. But..... do the math again: 22 div. 48, * 46 div.25, = .84
That is what the output shaft would turn for 1 full turn of the input shaft. Or you could say a 1.19:1 ratio which would still leave that gear set being 4th gear, with 5th being direct.

Ratios for the 3052 are: R=7.36:1, 1st=7.55:1, 2nd=4.18:1, 3rd=2.45:1, 4th=1.45:1 and 5th=1:1

Your tranny then would be: R=7.36:1, 1st=7.55:1, 2nd=4.18:1, 3rd=2.45:1, 4th=1.19:1 and 5th=1:1.
No overdrive, a big jump form 3rd to 4th and 4th to 5th very close now, doesn't make to much sense IMHO.

gerhard, if just the input gear set was changed on a 3052, wouldn't that give a od of .86? (maybe this is where the myth of .85 od came from) of course it would effect all other ratios as well, perhaps adversely. isn't it strange that when buying replacement gears, there is only one choice of part numbers, whether for a 3053, A, or B??

ya i did the math on it and i was doing it looking at putting the gears from the 3053a into the 3052. but that wouldnt help much i might give it a try .i want the higher first second and third of the 3052 .but i dont want to loose all my top speed .if i just went with a 3052 i would only have a top speed of 53 .i would like to have my top speed closer to 60

maybe if they made some different input gears like 31 input and 42 on the counter shaft with the rest of the gears from the 3053a then you could use first and have a higher od to

Emmmmm, not sure........ (scratching my head.... this is very complicated after just a short night and a lot of  so........ HAPPY NEWYEAR TO EVERYONE !:-D)

Tom and tm: 29/42 in place of 22/48 right? OK, for me that would be 29div.42, then multiplied by 42div.28 = 1.036.... or .97:1 (5th gear)
So ratios would be: R=4.89:1, 1st=5.01:1, 2nd=2.78:1, 3rd=1.62, 4th=1:1, 5th= .97:1

Very little gain on the high end (53mph -> 55mph) and sacrificing the main advantage of the 3052's granny low 1st, IMHO.

What you tm (and others running 46") tires probably needed is a 3053 with a (custom) input gear set of 27/43, then 1st would be lower at 5.5:1 and 5th o.d. .87:1 which would convert 53mph into 61mph.
A 31/42 set (if it was possible to fab/adapt) would make everything worse, I guess...
