Interesting, I didn't notice. Now that I critique it I believe
I see no stamping in the hood butterfly either that says
AM GENERAL and I do not think I see expanded metal
in front of the radiator.
And no steps hanging below the bumper, front mudflaps, or transmission cooler in front of the radiator.

Bad news, got a hole in the radiator, water pump bearings are shot. Good news, installing the new alternator upgrade just got a whole lot easier.

Oh boy... LotsOwork ahead.
Don't forget to lay in that small wire from the dash to the Alt
while you are there. I laid mine right where the other wires
cross the top front of the engine. I took the time to add a piece
of heat shield up there too.

Dot your t's and cross your i's and wrench away!

I was considering buying one of those spare radiators then
I determined it might be wiser to just get it fixed, or drop
in something else if "it" happens.

That's a nice looking shed you go there. Did you put that up yourself?
Yes. Took two 40' containers, put em 50' apart. Got bigger bar joists from the local scrap yard, welded three together to make 120' spans. Then made smaller bar joists to go between em. Milled pine 2 x 4 rough size stringers, then covered with galvy decking.

That is a piece of work.

So the 120 foot clear spans were erected in-place and section-welded, is that how you did it (i.e., no hoisting)?

Ahab, yes, the entire structure was erected with just the backhoe in the picture. 90% of it was built alone by me, with no helper.

Artisan, I've taken you're advice, so I'm following the instructions to the letter. That switch wire was one of the first steps. I only have an hour in it so far, but one got the wire ran, old alternator removed, pulleys switched, and new alternator loosely bolted in place. I've been called back to the production shop for a few days so it will be a while before I get to finish. I'll post some pics soon

I always figured this photo was an early or prototype M920 - it does not the air dryer in front of the fuel tank, or the transfer case cooler below the winch platform. It doesn't look like it has the expanded metal platforms in front of the 5th wheel, and the 5th wheel spacer, ramps, and roller are all different than most of the 916/920 examples I've seen.

Probably has the ashtrays in the doors...

I don't have any photos, but some of the M915 series trucks have ashtrays on the door below the window crank. I think its an early thing, but they may have all come with them and then lost them over time.

Thanks for answering that, my 916 does have ashtrays on both doors.
I was just wondering what the significance was when you mentioned that.
My truck is pretty clean but not nearly as nice as yours or Artisans.

Was your truck manufactured in 1979? I think I have seen more without the ashtrays than with.

I was thinking about your truck today. I drove my M916 to Barstow,CA and back to pick up
an ISO Container hauling flatbed, 2 axle, 8 tires, diamond plated, flatbed trailer,
w/ Dexter 12K Axles and Air brakes, and some other widgets as well. It was HOT
but my A/C kept me sane...

On the way back I hit a crazy unheard of rain downpour in the San Bernadino
area and it actually got COLD in the cab!

Theres only one "maybe" two left.
...and eventually I will have a nice used one for sale.

M916 DIODE in CB Box

So one of our esteemed members wrote me asking me
for a part number for the ENGINE TEMPERATURE DIODE .

Huh??????????

OK, well off I go, I have to know. Sure enough in the -20 TM you see
this ENGINE TEMPERATURE DIODE installed on the far right side
of the circuit breaker mount/holder.

For future reference to remove these CB's / Diode you remove the two
Phillips head screws (far right and far left) holding down the CB holder
and undo the small "whiz" nuts and they drop out from the BACK of the holder.

So I pull out this ENGINE TEMPERATURE DIODE and indeed there is
a part number on it. The P/N is NOT in the TM so take note.

ENGINE TEMPERATURE DIODE P/N (as seen in "my" truck) = BUSS 13730 3A/32V MAX N24

Is that really a diode?

Found installed w/ copper stud up.

I "think" it is a Series 12X Shortstop Circuit Breakers

I went looking briefly for this item and did not find it.
I wrote tech support at Eaton, I "think" BUSS is no EATON.???

Please post up if you find it / more info.



EDIT:

I pulled a CB to the left of the diode to verify P/N's were different
and indeed they are.

Doing the above I found LOOSE Whiz nuts....check yours!

Who has some extra WHIZ nuts ? I see my CB's / Diode were not
put together as the TM demands.
