Hello,
I would just like to remind everyone of the upcoming MV show & swap meet at the Cradle of Aviation Museum at the Former Mitchel Air Force Base site in Garden City. (1917-1961)
There will be MVs, parts, show cars, George Barris customs, (Batmobile etc.) & of course the museum. Show hours are 9-5 both days. This is a great oppurtunity for some you NJ MTA guys to come visit.
The show trucks will be placed in the courtyard between the hangars and the museum as well as out front.
Please mark your calendars come out & enjoy!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Brief History:
Started out in 1917 as a training facility for the Signal Corps Army Air Service as Aviation Field#2. It was renamed Mitchel Field in 1918 after former NYC Mayor John Mitchel (nyc's youngest mayor) crashed and died while training there. After WWI it steadily grew to four concrete runways: 4,800ft., 4,960ft., 5,142ft., & 5,508ft. along with numerous maintenence & administration facilities. During WWII two squadrons operated full time as well as testing and ferrying of newly delivered aircraft.
Due to the close proximity of the base to growing urban development, several crashes occured where significant damage to buildings & homes occured. From 47-49 it was headquarters for the Continental Air Command. On at least three occaisions a P-47, F-82, and C-119 Boxcar crashed into Nearby Hoftsra University Buildings & Dorms.
The last active unit to be based at Mitchel was the 514th Troop Carrier Wing flying Fairchild C-119 Flying Boxcars. Many of the buildings and hangars as well as portions of the runways & ramps still remain as other uses.
