Does anyone have the documentation from the manufacturer providing proof of the date and level of revision that their M35A3 was re-manufactured to?

I am interested in obtaining a copy of this document if possible, as I am researching this time in history of the M35 over it's years of service.

If you have one and would be willing to scan it and email it to me, I would be most thankful.

I am assuming it is a standard format from the various manufacturers. Please correct me if I am wrong.

And if you do have one, was there a re-certification specification that the truck then met after re-manufacture?

If you are concerned about my mis-use of this information, please black out any vehicle specific information before sending.

My email addy is: advenmotor@yahoo.com

Thanks in advance,

Rick

48 views but no reply..... "thump, thump, thump. Is this thing on"???

I emailed AM General a few days ago, thinking they would be able to help me, but you know how those "Contact us" things go with big companies!

I imagine my email is being treated like a hot potato within their email system. It's probably hit more desks than a young blond secretary.

Alright, after this friendly diatribe, I expect to be flooded with your kind assistance...

No reply generally means no answers. As much as this bunch likes to chat, it's surprising to see them remain quiet.

There was more than one source of M35A3s some were built by AM General, some by National Guard units at Camp Shelby, MS, and Camp Funstan, Kansas. The program, in broad terms, turned three M35A2s into two M35A3s. The conversion was extraordinarily comprehensive, and resulted in "new" vehicles with new VINs and registration numbers assigned.

The AM General built vehicles cost the government about $60,000 each, the Guard-built vehicles about $52,000 each.

So, are you looking for the service history of your M35A3, or are you hoping to find the service histories of the trucks that became your M35A3? If the latter, I suspect that will be nearly impossible. From the research I've done, this work was done en masse. As an example, pour 3 Tinker Toy sets in the floor, mix them, then make two Ferris Wheels, and identify which Tinker Toy set made which Ferris Wheel.

Good luck with your quest.

Best wishes,
David Doyle

DOGHEAD: With regard to AM General, I have received responses from them previously. They took the time to research the number of M932s produced in 1983 and the number of M929s produced in 1984. They even sent me the info on AM General letterhead! I used to own each vehicle and I needed to know the number of vehicles produced to get historic tags on a vehicle that was less than 25 years old (at the time). MD has since reduced the eligibility of vehicles for historic tags to 20 years.

JASONJC: Great question! I believe they also re-used the hoods. I am unsure if they might have reused the fenders. I know they reused the axles, although they were reworked to some extent to accept the CTIS.

Interesting. Did the NG units perform the work under license of AM General? Did the NG manufactured trucks come with a document certifying compliance to the new specifications?

Neither. I am seeking a copy of whatever document says a M35A3 is new for the year it was remanufactured.
This is an important point that will help me in another project I'm researching in addition to the general history.

Yeahbut....

Tap.. tap.. Check, 1,2,3

AM General, does not usually respond to anyone they don't do business with. They do not deal with the public.
Yeahbut I still gotta try. What if somebody nice and caring happened to be on the email duty when my query arrived? It may be my lucky day.....

Rick,
I take it that you want a piece of paper that says "this M35A3 VIN XXXXXX was built new in 1994 (or whenever) - that would be the SF97.

If you are looking for a document that says "the M35A3 series was first produced in _______ year", the contract (DAAE07-93C-R110) for the M35A3 Medium Tactical Truck Extended Service Program (ESP) was first awarded on 9/20/1993 - and was extended several times until 10/30/1998 ) If you are looking for the date when the eight pilots were delivered. I believe that date is in Fred Crismon's small thin Modern Military Vehicles book (I no longer have a copy, or I'd look for you).

Be careful in your digging so you don't accidentally grab data on the Cummins Military Systems Contract which was a similar program with Cummins 6B5.9 engines rather than Cat 3116 engines. Those 300 units went to Foreign Military Sales.

When possible, the frame, bed, axles and a lot of the sheet metal from the M35A2s were reused. I suspect that if we went to a DRMO lot and picked up the first M35A2s we came to that we would be hard-pressed build to show grade, mechanically new trucks on a one for one basis. Rust, cracks, and simple wear would account for a lot of parts - especially spread over a large group of vehicles (how many of us have "parts trucks" in the back?) - I'd imagine this is the same problem that AM General and the Guard encountered.

Best wishes,
David Doyle

Yes, the SF97 is EXACTLY what I am looking for. I had no idea the manufacturer (or NG units) were supplying SF97's to the military with the trucks they were re-manufacturing.

Do you or anyone else reading this have a SF97 copy that can be scanned? Again, to make yourself comfortable, cover any sensitive information you don't want letting out.

I was under the impression the SF97 was a document to allow transition from Government ownership to citizen titling/registration within their state.

Thanks, I waiting for the arrival of an ordered a copy of the MV booklet from Amazon!

David, thank you for your aid and information. It is much appreciated.

I evidently have mislead you - the SF-97 is generated when the vehicle is released from government ownership.

It will include the year manufactured (the M35A3s are considered manufactured trucks, not remanufactured trucks).

If you can provide us with the end goal, we may be able to provide more assistance (or if you prefer, you can PM me with this info).

Best wishes,
David

There is a publication out there that describes all of the upgrades it took to create an M35A3 and the estimated value of the parts used to gen up a "new" A3. I might have it in a thumbdrive someplace.

All A3's are called 1993's no matter when they are made. They are all built to the same standard using a 1993 emissions engine that actually has the emmissions waviered. Mine was made it very late 1998 or early 1999. Calling it a 1993 truck makes it easier for emmissions and various crap in my state. Mine passed with flying colors.

Upon review, the Army realized they gave away three very nice trucks, in far better shape than expected and got back two new trucks. I have a feeling AM General made tons selling the spare parts they rebuilt back to the Army when they serviced trucks.

I'd appreciate your posting of the info about the A3 upgrades if you can find it.

I have a different understanding of the year model designation:

What I learned after posting this thread is that upon application of the SF-97, it is up to the purchaser to state the year model on the application. Apparently the gov is blind to the specific build date and does not default to the contract date, but instead relies on the purchaser for this info.

This detail can work for you in your circumstance, seeking the more lenient 1993 year model emissions limits, as well as for me seeking the newest year model available.
