I haven't ever tapered holes for pipe taps. It would be better but most people don't have tapered reamers lying around their shop.

The tap will taper the hole as it cuts most of the time. It can get tough though if you go very deep into something like mild steel. I'd say a tapered hole would be mandatory on something like stainless.

I wonder how well that mount will hold up over rough terrain?

Other than that it looks good.

the idea behind the mount is just temp until I can get something fabbed.
