Boarding Ladder theft

So, I go back to Camp Dodge today to preview a current auction. While I was there, I checked on the m109a3 I was high bid on in March. I was concerned about the boarding ladder that "used" to be hanging on the back.

Well, it was gone. The boarding ladder that used to be laying in the back of the one next to mine, was gone too. Sucks, they were on the trucks during the auction and preview. I hope the rest of the truck is there when my EUC finally clears.

Were there pics of the boarding ladder in the GL sale photos?

Did you ask one of the GL folks at the site about the ladders?

This is why we can no longer roam at will at GL sites.....a few buttheads steal stuff and we all have to be escorted now when we preview.

I don't know about Camp Dodge but all the GL locations I have been to require visitors to sign in and get a badge......unless it was an inside job all the suspects are on some kind of list.

Theft of government property is a Federal crime.....it can get you time in a Federal Correctional Facility where you will meet a lot of mean people who want to do bad things to you.

I did not report it today, because I never saw the GL rep. No sign in needed, you just flash the gate your ID and you pretty much have free roam of the place. My guess is one of the other 109 winners snagged it, probably a dealer. There were several in that auction all side by side. But only 2 sitting there today.

There are no photos of it in the auction. So, I am not sure if it is worth even trying to do anything about it. I will just end up making my own ladder. I just hope my EUC clears before any more parts "walk away"

If you can "preveiw" that easily, it might be in your best interest to go for a "preview" immediately after winning a vehicle, such that you can padlock any loot to the truck. Just get some cheapo padlocks and chain and go to down!!!

That might keep the honest thieves honest at least... :)

What I can't figure out is how are they not getting caught taking off parts and other things off the trucks while GL guys are around, I know the last couple of times I went with one of the guys there they watch us while we were getting the trucks to run, and somebody had stoling the bows and canvas off his m105.

There are no GL guys there. At Camp Dodge, the GL lot is right next to a storage lot full of a couple hundred sundry ARNG vehicles in an unlocked lot in the back 40 of the base. You could drive a large truck on there and rob all the parts you want. No one would really notice.

On the bright side, even though they are in an unlocked lot, they have recently fenced it in, although while I was there for two weeks, I never saw the gate shut.

I've been to some bases where they watch your every move. I've also been to some that I'll bet you you could get into a truck, fire it up, and drive off of base without anybody batting an eye.

I won't metion which base it is (don't want to give anybody any ideas) but I was previewing trucks and was allowed free range in about a 10 acre lot with 100 or more trucks sitting in it. There was nobody around in the back of the lot but there was alot of activity around the gate (trucks going in and out to a nearby warehouse). I'll bet you could have hauled anything out of that lot you wanted to because nobody was paying attention to the gate activity.

How about the theft of Wikallen's property? Even though he doesn't have a paid invoice yet, he did pay for the truck. Even GL trucks are no longer Gov't property.
All I know is that is sucks!

What makes you think it could have been a dealer? I'd be shocked if a dealer even picked up his own trucks and he sure as s*** is not going to tell the trucker to grab your ladder (unless, of course, by "dealer" you are referring to everyone and his brother who now buys several trucks to sell). It was a collector or end-user or whatever you want to call them. I wouldn't be surprised if he is on this list.

Bruce, Man now thats the nail on the head, a Dealer is "Mr Snuffy" buying 15 trucks as a hobbyist(EUC) and selling them from his back yard. Thats the dealer that would do that to you.

The lock and chain on all your stuff right after you win the truck is a great idea. -Jay

Dealer as in someone that wants the parts to resell. Would it be better if I said, reseller? I mean no offense to honest dealers, just figured someone would steal all the ladders of the 109s, to resell. Yes, I would refer to anyone that buys and sells trucks, a dealer. Nothing wrong with buying and reselling, nothing wrong with a dealer. It very well could be just an end user that wanted an extra ladder, just figured it was grabbed to make a dollar.

"Dealers", be them business or personal, are no different than everyone else. There are honest and dishonest ones.

At different times, I have been a back yard used equipment dealer, importer and a new equipment dealer. Other dealers and the general public all come in all the different varieties.

I still don't understand how GL cannot be responsible for the theft of property that a person has paid for and is not allowed to pick up until the EUC clears, or they can get there to pick it up. If you file a complaint before you remove the vehicle from the lot you would have a much stronger argument.

Lock idea sounds great, but all the wooden tool boxes in the back of the 109s had the locks cut off of them as well.

Im sure the locks that are cut were done by the Gov. If your looking to prevent theft then the guy stealing it wont walk around with bolt cutters. At least it will be a little harder for him . -Jay
