The Brittish Carrier Ark Royal is up for auction. I hope posting this does not violate SS rules about auctions but it was on fox news today.

They have that ramp at the end as their decks are significantly shorter then that of the US carriers. Its just to help makesure the plane gets enough lift.

Not to ruin the joke stream with a straight answer, but the ski ramp is because they don't have a catapault.

Limey's only used Harriers on their flat-tops. rather than go straight up, they get a rolling start with the ski jump. saves fuel on take-off.

that's why they got so pummeled early on in the Faulklands. No long distance high speed interceptors to stop the Arg Mirages, only short range attack birds.

So be warned, you cannot land your surplus F-14 Tomcats on this boat.
