Now that would be something, a kettenkrad. A hotrod Kettenkred nonetheless.

Excuse me- You've got a good idea going there. That's a neat design. Where do you get the tracks??

Yeah, a Kettenkrad -by itself, exact reproduction,- would be a terrific project. And the Purists have their place, absolutely.

But it's a big world and there's room for a little of everything, right? Including maybe even a Hot Rod Kettenkrad?!

Those tracks are mini excavator tracks, but very long ones. You can get them at Global track warehouse and many other track sellers.

Kettenkrads are exceptionally complex machines and not easily replicated. They are also exceptionally dangerous with exposed track and being very narrow. It was originally designed as a prime mover that would fit into the Ju-52 which is not a very large plane. I have driven four different models. They perform well but throw a track at speed; dead. Turn too sharp; dead. Roll it on uneven terrain; dead.

I built a tank using a normal truck diff and differential steering. A diesel engine running a hydraulic pump and a hydraulic motor to drive the tail shaft which gave me forward and reverse. I built this for a paintball park here in Australia and it worked very well and was all second hand parts.

Love those paint ball tanks. Watched lots of youtube of them. So you just use the fluid power for propulsion, not steering? You brake steer it?

Wacky idea? Yeah it is. Sure! And it might not be your thing, and no problem there if it isn't, of course.

Nice!! I also think those paintball tanks are neat for scenarios and what not. I think that APCs would be REALLY cool for those. Everyone hoping out the back of an armored vehicle and entering right into a game?? Pretty cool.

Okay, so the other day I was riveting the ribs onto a buddy of mine's triplane. We were talking on the subject of tanks and whatnot because another friend of mine was in an armored unit a while ago and was a tanker. Anyhow, the fact that I was building a plane and talking about tanks got me thinking: Can I build my own??

SilverCat: Have you thought about building a replica Kettenkrad? The real ones are insanely expensive and very rare. In my opinion, the coolness factor of a Kettenkrad is a 9.9/10. It's small, and might be a little more manageable than taking on a fresh design of a light tank. Also, the WWII German Reenactors would go bat crazy if they found out they could purchase a Kettenkrad replica. If I had the time, money, and skill, I would love to develop a replica and sell it to the reenactor community.

Building a replica Kettenkrad is possible! Ours has a 10HP diesel engine, cvt transmission and a utv rear axle for foward/reverse. Suspension is rubber torsion and the tracks are 100% homemade. Steering is a combination of turning brakes and a hand lever for each track.

6X6REX are you the one that built the tiger tank? I have seen the web site on that tank and other projects I admire that.

I did not build it but I've done a fair amount of work on it! Will is a good friend of mine.

Thats a Bombardier SW48 snowcat I believe. Its used to plow sidewalks and not very good off road. I would love to get a BR100 or a Bombi and turn it into a tank.

I already start a tank replica on a Bombardier J-5 basis, project just started and stopped after I bought a M113A2! LOL...No need for a replica anymore! The J-5 is 5 feet wide and a lot more stable off-roading!
