Cat 3116 Swap?

Hello,

I am not planning on doing this, just throwing around some ideas. Would it be possible to swap a Cat 3116 engine into an M35A2 and have it bolt up to the stock 3053a transmission? From what I can see, the 3053a uses an adapter to go from SAE 2-3, so as long as the Cat is within those two specs, it should bolt up?

Alternatively, would it be possible to swap the 3116 with the transmission that comes with that engine, like a road ranger or other big truck trans?

Let me know what you guys think. Not actually doing this swap, but just thinking of cool ideas. My buddy has a rollback with a 3116 and it runs really well, sounds mean and seems to last forever (he isn't super on maintenance haha)

Spicergear did this swap about 10 years ago. Tom had a good bit of fitment issues if I remember correctly. But, it did fit and work great. Search for Spicergear and you will be amazed at the quality of work and sheer ingenuity on display.

Notice how an A3 hood is longer. There must be significant issues, like the radiator mount for one.

I tried looking at the only thread I could find was for a slightly different model CAT engine. But it looked like it worked fine minus the need to make an adapter plate.

And the inter-cooler.
Intercooler mount would be interesting. Do you think an intercooler would still be required? It wouldn't be optimal, but there are plenty of turbo diesels out there without an intercooler making similar or more power...
