Clunking in drivers dash, foot area or under the floor – M1078A1?

We have a clunky noise that I am yet to locate on the drivers side. It almost sounds like something is able to slide/swing side to side, though will also clunk over certain terrain variations.

We can make it sound while driving down a county road and steering side to side. And it clunks going over uneven road ways, though not always.

I have inspected (though not disassembled) the forward leaf spring bushing, shock mounts, steering linkage (drag link and tie rods - replaced the protective covers). I have searched in the dash box, removed and reinstalled the heater box and defroster grill, inspected the wiper linkage. Sometimes I wonder if a socket got dropped between the forward cab skins behind the air hoses?

It doesn't sound when starting or stopping. Only with motion side to side and up or down; up followed by down is loudest as if something floated up then dropped. After looking through TM-9-2320-365-24P.pdf I am at a loss of where to look next. Any thoughts?

As we tighten up loose items and insulate the cab this noise is becoming more prominent and annoying–

The jokers at S&S (BAE) left a pneumatic riv-nut gun (10x32 of course) inside the cab wall behind the driver's side seatbelt retractor on my 2008. Would rock side to side and clunk against the inside and outside sheet metal of the cab. Took many, many months to uncover that one. Had to be there from the factory based on the disassembly required to remove it and how filthy it was.

Also found a pair of military channel lock branded blue handled pliers that some grunt had to field loss on his next GMTK inventory. Wedged below one of the seat adjuster rails. Only found it when I removed the original seats.

It could be ANYTHING.

I've never heard my kneeling hardware make any noise. FWIW.

Sounds like a story that went around when the UAW was going on strike - way back when. Supposedly somebody on the assembly line put a coke bottle in the door of a truck with a note in it saying "bet you looked forever before you found this".

Almost surely apocryphal but likely has some kind of kernel of truth. The version I heard was the coke bottle was in an (A, B, C) pillar and was hung by a coat hanger or piece of MIG wire so it could swing and knock like a wind chime. The famous news report of the Chrysler factory workers getting drunk on lunch break or showing up for work after putting away a 6 pack or burning a few J's:


Anyone think the homies building our trucks were higher speed than these jokers? If tis truth I haven't found much evidence of it.

The coke bottle story needs an update - was it *really a coke bottle or was it some steel reserve or OE or maybe some MD 20/20? 🤪

Have you already ruled out front shackles?
I totally understand as we make them more quiet the little noises start to bother us. Driving down the road can’t stop trying to figure out what the heck is making that noise. I had on in the AC unit that sometimes you could hear it when the fan speed was just right. Fixed it was the damper fluttering on the metal some foam strip solved that. Fix some rattles in the doors as well.

If you still have the original air bags cab suspension? I had the rubber bushings inside on the small shock disintegrated making a clunk noise.

It is probably A M9 some troop hid in the void space rattling around.
That would be quite the find. And quite the career ending field loss for the individuals responsible for that weapon. You should see the absolute shit storm of paperwork and irate officers if someone loses track of a set of NVG's.... I have never seen a weapon go missing although if it happened on a legitimate deployment I could see maybe it being forgiven depending on circumstances.

Now..... Finding a "souvenir" that someone stashed and forgot about from a deployment... That would be amazing!

I have witnessed a M9 lost in service(stripped out of a holster by an obstruction while boarding a vessel). yes, even with 4 eye witnesses it was a PITA...

Have you tried thumping on things with a rubber mallet? That can sometimes induce the loose object to make some noise while stationary.

How are your cab pivots?

The cylinders are still in place, the hardware removed right after purchase. Those bits were our first attempt at noise reduction—

1— Shackles, front and rear, are in a recovery gear bag;
2— Replaced cab air bags with NOS months ago.

We appreciate all suggestions. So far @Mullaney @GeneralDisorder and @Ronmar have the best suggestions and hardest to locate or silence—

Thumping with a mallet I have not tried. Thank you.
I think the pivots are good. Though other than rocking the cab about and watching how it raises and lowers I haven't inspected them—
