Correct transmission oil

Ok,been following this thread and figured I would post what I use and have had good luck with,

I use Costal 80W90 GL-5 for the axles,winches and all other gear boxes on all of my trucks,except for the trans and transfer cases,I use Castrol C50 drivetrain lubricant for those on all my trucks and I have noticed a measureable temperature drop on everything I have put it in.

Just my 2 cents worth.

That was interesting reading. Thanks 67X. I have the same feeling as Westex, time for change. I have Royal Purple in my pickup and haven't liked it much sense I started using it. Had to add limited slip modifier to reduce chatter in the rear. Seems like slightly more gear noise also. Could just be me though. According to the tests in the above document seems like Amsoil has the best all around balance of properties. Pricey, but then again so are transmissions and rears.

After searching online and locally, i was not able to find very affordable options for the transmission. Finding anything that is non detergent, yellow metal safe, and all that is absolute hell, especially if you dont want to blow 200 bucks on a pail.

The best i could do, was 80 bucks for traveller brand sae 40wt. I'm in north idaho, going into winter, so I hope its fine.

Sure, I understand from all you guys what you SHOULD use, but what about what you can reasonably get ahold of?

The previous owner of the truck had put dot 3 in the brakes. That was not cool. Caused me a lot of work. So now I'm freaking out about the possibilities of what he could have put in the tranny
... changing everything out now!

Can we ask a little more? Guessing this is a manual transmission? I just don't see that anywhere in the post. 80w90 in warm climates and it can be thinner in the winter in - say maybe Idaho in the winter. OR, if you plan to park it in the cold weather then the thicker stuff is just fine.

Maybe I missed it?

Yes, for the manual spicer 5spd on an m35a2, and transfer case.

80 -90 is good, but not easy to get in gl1, good find with the napa stuff davidb56.

I came up empty handed trying to find stuff stocked locally. Our main places up here that stock 5 gallon pails are going to be north 40 and tractor supply co. Neither have sae 40 or 50 wt in stock, and no gl1 anything. Pretty sure they dont have gl4 anything either. At least nothing usable. They did have plenty of GL5 80-90, which I will use in the diffs.

When looking online, alternatives such as oep 220 gear oils get very pricey after shipping.

You can get ahold of anything, sure, but I didnt have much luck in my own searches finding anything without a shameless price on it.

I dont mean to go all cheap, not on my favorite truck, but I still have principles!

I can't speak to your particular Napa, but mine carries the 65-205 part #.

I suspect if you ask them, they'll order you a bucket.

My Napa now stocks several deuce items, like wheel cylinders, alternator and compressor belts, etc., after I requested it.

Have anyone ever mixed in the lucas transmission fix? I know some guys who does it with their manuals to get smoother shifts, I don't know how it'll work mixed in the spicer
I'm not sure that will be a good idea. Being the stop leak type of product, I'm sure it has additives in it and that may prove to be bad for the bronze bushings or the "yellow metal."
